More PlayStation Movies Are Planned After Uncharted | Game Rant

The president of Sony Interactive has stated that PlayStation has plans to adapt more of its titles for the screen after Uncharted and The Last of Us. Speaking at CES 2021, president Jim Ryan said that these upcoming adaptations are “just the beginning of the expansion of our storytelling into new media and even wider audiences.”

PlayStation is no doubt hoping that its upcoming movie adaptation of the Uncharted games sees success. Having completed filming in 2020, Uncharted features Spider-Man star Tom Holland as a younger Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg as Sully. Images released for the film’s promotion resemble the look and aesthetic of the source material, which is promising for fans. The success of Uncharted would be sure to increase demand and anticipation for any other PlayStation adaptations.

Along with Uncharted, HBO has confirmed that it will be working with PlayStation on a TV series adaptation of The Last of Us. The series is not as far along in production as Uncharted, with the cast yet to be announced. HBO has however confirmed that Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin, writers of HBO miniseries Chernobyl, will be the writers on this series. Chernobyl gained mass acclaim from both critics and audiences, which makes this choice of writers very exciting.

Sony appears to be approaching both of these adaptations differently. While there is no trailer yet for Uncharted, the casting of two known action stars suggests it will be an action-oriented blockbuster. Meanwhile, the collaboration with HBO and Chernobyl‘s writers for The Last of Us could suggest it’s going in a darker, more serious direction. This suggests that Sony is making sure the way the game is adapted suits its source material, which is promising for whichever properties they decide to adapt in the future.

Video game movies often get a reputation for not being very good, even if the film is a box office success. Whether that reputation is justified or not is arguable, but upcoming game or game inspired adaptations seem determined to change it for the better. This includes Free Guy, the upcoming Resident Evil movie, and the Borderlands adaptation, which is set to star Oscar winner Cate Blanchett.
