For some fans, it feels like forever since Capcom last talked about Resident Evil 8, officially titled Resident Evil Village. Fortunately, the wait for new details will soon be over as Capcom has announced a Resident Evil Showcase for next week, specifically on January 21st at 2 pm PT / 5 pm EST / 10 pm GMT.
Announced via the official Twitter account, the showcase will be hosted by Brittney Brombacher, who co-hosts the What’s Good Games podcast, and feature series producers. Naturally, Resident Evil 8 will be the primary focus, with Capcom to share a new trailer and first-ever gameplay.
Previous trailers had shown glimpses of what the gameplay would be like, but this should clarify certain details that some fans are in the dark about. Some aspects have been discussed in the past, with some fans being lucky enough to try an exclusive demo, the details of which were later shared online.
There are plenty of mysteries surrounding the game’s story as well, with series regular Chris Redfield seemingly taking the role of antagonist, though there is some debate over whether it’s really the Chris fans know or an imposter. There’s also the question of whether the new monsters encountered in the game are the result of another virus or if they are more supernatural in origin, which would be a first for the series.
Some details have unfortunately been leaked online over the last few months, following a severe security breach at Capcom that saw a lot of personal information and private data be stolen, including unannounced projects. As a result, some major story spoilers and cutscenes obtained from an in-development build have been uploaded and shared among certain forums.
Resident Evil 8 won’t be the sole focus though, with the announcement stating that there will be news related to the franchise as a whole. As for what else could be shown, there are plenty of possibilities considering what else Capcom has in store for this year.
For starters, Netflix has the CGI animated Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness series that’s set to air in 2021 and star Leon and Claire, the protagonists of Resident Evil 2. This is the second TV show it has in the pipeline, with a live-action one centered around a new set of characters – the Wesker twins – in production too, though that doesn’t have a release date yet.
There’s also the movie reboot, which finished filming at the end of 2020, and the Resident Evil 4 remake that’s reportedly in development, though the latter is unlikely to release this year considering Capcom hasn’t technically announced it yet. Though perhaps Capcom will give it a passing mention during the showcase.
In addition, Capcom will be running a closed beta test for an unannounced project for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. No details have been shared aside from it being something that will celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary, but Capcom will explain more during the showcase.
Resident Evil 8 is scheduled to release this year for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
