Super Smash Bros. Director Masahiro Sakurai Calls Cyberpunk 2077 A ‘Dream Game’

It’s clear that many people who bought Cyberpunk 2077 did not find the experience favorable, to say the least. From massive frame rate drops to glitches to poor optimization in general, Cyberpunk 2077 has a number of players disappointed by the experience. Although, one of the most notable members of the video game industry has a lot of good things to say about the game.

Masahiro Sakurai, on top of being the director and creator of Super Smash Bros., is also an avid video game player. He authors a column for the widely popular Japanese video game magazine Famitsu and releases articles talking about facets of his everyday life, including his love for video games.

Although, on the topic of Cyberpunk 2077, Masahiro Sakurai has quite a lot to say about the game, and it’s mostly positive. First off, he remarked how he was moved by the number of refunds the game received, saying that CD Projekt Red possessed an “unprecedented sincerity.” In a way, that’s somewhat true given that a lot of games within the last several years have released in a buggy, unfinished state and were met with similar disdain.

As far as what he thinks of the game, while Sakurai did run into a lot of the same bugs and glitches that many other players encountered, and despite alternating between PC, PS4, and PS4 Pro versions of the game, Sakurai still enjoyed Cyberpunk 2077. He described it as a “dream game,” the likes of which require an extreme amount of ambition and planning in order to bring it to life.

It’s nice to see someone like Sakurai, who’s spent several decades working in the gaming industry, be able to recognize and appreciate the merits of a game, in spite of its current technical issues. As it stands now, from a technical standpoint, quite a lot can go wrong in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, but a lot of fans of the game are still holding out hope that CD Projekt Red will rectify these issues in time.

It will be interesting to see what the future holds for Cyberpunk 2077. It’s clear by the hotfixes CD Projekt Red has put out for the game already that the studio is doing everything it can in order to get this game up and running for players on all platforms. As for Sakurai, if he enjoys the game, then maybe he would consider putting Johnny Silverhand in Super Smash Bros. Maybe as a Mii Fighter.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions currently in development.
