After months of anticipation, the first Cherry trailer has finally dropped. Reunited by this crime drama are Spider-Man actor Tom Holland and Marvel-directing duo, the Russo Brothers, who were the brains behind Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and many others.
The movie is based on a novel of the same name and follows a young man named Cherry (Tom Holland) as he navigates young adulthood. It shows the character following in love, enlisting in the Army, and returning home with PTSD and an addiction to opioids. As expected from the trailer, Cherry will be gritty, emotional, and filled with bad choices.
Similar to his recent role in the Netflix movie, The Devil All The Time, Holland will be playing an anti-hero— a character who is not quite a villain, but also lacks a traditional “hero”/protagonist persona. This is seen during the pivotal point in the movie’s trailer where Cherry is robbing a bank. The character is seen sliding a dollar bill across to a banker with a message that reads “I have a gun, this is a robbery” written on it in red sharpie. Breaking the fourth wall, he says towards the camera, “The one thing about robbing banks is that you’re mostly robbing women, so the last thing you want to be is rude.” He reassures the bank teller while holding her at gun-point, “It’s nothing personal.”
Referred to as the “most personal movie we’ve made” by the Russo Brothers, the movie appears to be intensely intimate. Through all of Cherry’s difficulties and crimes, remains his romantic partner Emily (played by Big Time Rush’s Ciara Bravo). Although her relationship to his criminal and drug-riddled lifestyle isn’t explored in the trailer, the two are seen holding hands in restaurants, and dancing and learning on one another in various scenes.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the directors explain that this movie will evoke and challenge the audience’s level of empathy. Joe Russo was quoted saying, “Tom is playing a character who makes some self-destructive choices, but he’s so charismatic and likable. It was important for us that the audience go on a journey with him when he makes those choices.”
This new Tom Holland flick will inarguably be an emotional ride and will give Tom Holland the room and freedom to explore a new character. In what might be Holland’s grittiest role yet, the Cherry trailer ticks all of the boxes for a well-composed drama; a tragic backstory, young love, and a constantly-moving plot.
Cherry will premiere theatrically on February 26 and March 12 onto Apple+.
