Anticipation for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot‘s final DLC is running high, especially as the game approaches its first anniversary. Neither Bandai Namco Entertainment nor CyberConnect2 have dropped any hints about how they plan on celebrating this anniversary in the game, but fans are expecting some kind of in-game event or big reveal. Naturally, the best case scenario for fans would be DLC 3 releasing on January 16th for the game’s anniversary, but fans would be wise to assess how likely that situation is given the history of Kakarot‘s other DLC releases.
Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot released on January 16th of 2020, almost one full year ago. It’s common for games to celebrate their anniversaries or other major milestones with in-game events, but since Kakarot doesn’t follow the typical live-service model of other games, fans are curious as to what this will look like. As of now, there’s still no news about DLC 3, so fans are still in the dark about the final part of this mysterious season pass. Having purchased it over a year ago, players understandably want to know what’s coming, but it seems at least for now that they’ll have to wait.
To put it plainly, the likelihood of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot releasing its third and final DLC on its anniversary is extremely low for a number of reasons. For starters, there haven’t been any announcements about the content of the DLC, and even sources like the V Jump magazine haven’t published anything about what fans can expect. In every other major content drop for Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, scans from these outlets revealed what was coming before Bandai Namco made any kind of official announcement. For this huge update to just shadow drop on the anniversary would be extremely unexpected.
Beyond that, there’s also the issue of the DLC schedule that Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has followed, or rather the lack thereof. The game released in January of 2020, and fans didn’t see the first DLC until April of the same year. Fans were expecting another three months to pass before DLC 2 released, but Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot broke its own DLC patterns and instead waited all the way until November 2020. With that over half year wait, it would be a miracle if the third DLC were somehow ready just a few short months later, especially since this one is supposed to be much longer than the others.
What is perhaps more plausible is that players will finally get an announcement regarding DLC 3’s status, content, and potentially even release date. At this point, there are only four Dragon Ball stories that would make sense for DLC 3 to adapt into game form, so the least Bandai Namco could do is tell fans which of those is coming next. More likely than not, it will cover the events of either the Universe 6 tournament, the Future Trunks Saga, Dragon Ball Super: Broly, or an entirely original story.
The benefit of this approach is that it doesn’t require any type of in game event or content drop on the developer side of things. Fans would likely be thrilled with the information even if there wasn’t anything new added to the game alongside it, making it the easier route for certain. On the other hand, this type of new information is usually shared via the V Jump magazine as previously mentioned, so it still may be a stretch to expect an announcement to come this early. Regardless, fans can be hopeful, and at the very least there isn’t long to wait to find out.
Notably, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has released a large batch of content before every major DLC. Before the Battle of Gods DLC, fans were treated to the time machine that allowed them to replay story missions. This added much needed replayability, addressing an issue where players often found themselves with nothing to do after beating Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot. Right before the release of DLC 2, the Card Warriors mode was added to the game, introducing the first hint of online multiplayer to an otherwise purely single-player title.
If there were to be some type of content added to Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot in celebration of its anniversary, it would likely be this type of pre-DLC content drop. Unlike other times, there’s no indication as to what this might be, but there are plenty of ways that Bandai Namco could run with this idea to add more to the game. Some commonly requested features are a way to perform fusion outside of the story, some what-if scenarios featuring enemies from popular Dragon Ball Z movies such as Janemba or Hirudegarn, or even difficulty settings and a new game plus mode.
Finally, fans have to face the truth that it’s entirely possible that Bandai Namco will do nothing. At the very least there will probably be a tweet calling out the game’s anniversary, but it should come as no surprise if the game itself doesn’t get any new content or reveals given Bandai Namco’s history with Kakarot‘s post-launch support. This is obviously the worst case scenario and it hopefully won’t come to this, but it is a very real possibility and shouldn’t be dismissed.
If this does end up being the case, things will simply go on as normal, with fans either enjoying the game’s Card Warriors mode, replaying story missions in the time machine, or occupying themselves with other games altogether until news of DLC 3 draws them back into the fold. That said, even if Bandai Namco does nothing to celebrate the anniversary of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, that doesn’t mean players can’t celebrate it on their own. It’s a great excuse to load up the game again and play around with the Super Saiyan Blue form, perhaps taking on Golden Frieza again or seeing how far players can get in Kakarot‘s new horde battle modes.
