Bungie Details Plans to Nerf Hunter Stasis Ability in Destiny 2

For the first time in the franchise, Bungie added new Darkness-based subclasses inside of the Beyond Light expansion for Destiny 2. Based in ice and slowing effects, Stasis has proven to be a largely controversial addition for the community, especially inside of competitive modes like the Crucible and Trials of Osiris. Many in the community feel that being slowed to a crawl and frozen in what is supposed to be a fast paced game mode just isn’t fun.

Since November, Bungie has already made numerous tweaks to the Stasis subclasses, taking an overly powerful Shadebinder class and nerfing it significantly before reverting some of the damage done a couple weeks later. The Hunter’s Revenant subclass appears to be the next class on the chopping block as the studio attempts to bring the Shatterdive ability back in line with the rest of the game as it currently hits very hard.

In the first weekly Destiny 2 update in 2021, Combat Area Lead Tomonori Kinoshita provided and update on a few of the changes that Hunters can expect to see inside of Update 3.0.2. With Shatterdive, the ability now has damage falloff when used against non-frozen targets and the maximum range has been significantly decreased from 50 to 5. The final nerf is that the user’s damage reduction during the move has also been reduced from 50% to 25%.

The Whisper of Fissures fragment is also getting adjusted within this update, as it is a popular choice to further boost the effects of Shatterdive. Detonation Radius was dropped from 10 meters ot 9 meters and the min-max damage values have also been shifted. When facing non-super players, the new min-max values are 30-4, instead of 42-22. When facing super enabled players, those values change even more going from 42-22 to 16-2. Overall, these changes are an attempt to lower the game’s overall ceiling by addressing these Stasis outliers. However, the ultimate goal is to raise the floor for other subclasses which may be seen as underperforming.

Thankfully, these changes only appear to be impacting PvP style modes as the blog post indicates the new values are against Guardians and not NPCs so those who enjoy feeling powerful in the PvE side of the game likely won’t see much of a difference. However, these changes appear to be just the start as the blog also indicates that after the dust settles on these changes, the studio is curious to see how the Titan’s Behemoth subclass now fits inside of the game’s PvP meta. Either way, Bungie appears to have its sights set on Titan’s next.
