Over its lifespan, the Nintendo Switch eShop has amassed a great wealth of digital titles, from big first party games, to small indie titles, to free applications for the Nintendo Switch. While the eShop serves as a great place to download digital Switch games, it also lets users manage their Nintendo Switch Online membership, allows for digital pre-orders, and even makes itself home to some neat Nintendo-themed easter eggs from time to time.
And although the eShop can provide a variety of services for Nintendo Switch owners, it has always lacked one key component: reviews. For one reason or another, Switch owners have never had the ability to rate and/or review games on the eShop, but one fan has now made their own website allowing users to rate and review Nintendo Switch games in one place.
Over on Reddit, user plump_tomato announced the launch of their self-made eShop game review website, SwitchCritic. Like the Switch eShop, the website provides a wish-list feature, videos, game file sizes, and more information on a plethora of Nintendo Switch games, but most importantly, the site allows users the opportunity to create an account in order to rate and review any Nintendo Switch game to their liking.
For whatever reason, Nintendo seems to intentionally restrict players from leaving ratings and reviews on the official eShop, unlike the PlayStation Store or Steam Store. Review systems built into digital game stores can be useful in helping players instantly decide whether or not to buy a particular game without having to resort to third party means to gain information on said video game. Plump_tomato has been incredibly active on Reddit, constantly listening to users’ feedback, making changes to website on the spot, like adding a search bar on the home page and disabling the ability for users to review games that have not released yet.
While the eShop has been rumored to be making some new changes, it is currently unknown whether Nintendo ever plans to officially add a review system to the digital store. Regardless, fans of the Switch can rest easy knowing that there is somewhere they can voice their opinions on Nintendo’s massive library of eShop games.
