Like any other year, 2020 was full of new video game releases. However, one of the most bizarre video games released in 2020 was undoubtedly Bugsnax, a strange game from Young Horses that was about muppet-like creatures called Grumpuses eating sentient food items. After eating these creatures, the titular Bugsnax, the Grumpuses would transform part of their body to resemble the food they just ate. A goofy concept on the surface, the plot of Bugsnax is much more sinister than it first seems.
The Bugsnax ending is rather grim, but it also sets the stage for a potential sequel. Whether or not Young Horses pursues a Bugsnax sequel remains to be seen, but it’s likely a safe bet that the game has been played by a decent number of people, and so there could be significant interest in such a project. After all, Bugsnax was the first free PS Plus game for PS5, and it was available to claim through the service for a whopping two months instead of the usual one. How many people actually bought Bugsnax is unclear, but what is clear is that the story is potentially far from over.
Here is what happens in the Bugsnax ending, and how the events that transpire perfectly set up a sequel. Please note that there will be SPOILERS ahead, so those that have yet to complete Bugnsax should proceed with caution.
The entire point of Bugsnax is to find Lizbert Megafig, an explorer Grumpus who reached out to a journalist about her discoveries on the mysterious Snaktooth Island. Upon arrival to Snaktooth Island, it’s clear that Lizbert has gone missing, and the other Grumpuses that traveled to the island with her have split up, abandoning their makeshift town of Snaxburg. The player then sets out to reunite the Grumpuses, bringing them back to Snaxburg while also interviewing them to learn more information about the Bugsnax creatures, Snaktooth Island, and Lizbert’s possible whereabouts.
Bugsnax players eventually succeed in bringing all of the Grumpuses back together, though Lizbert is still missing. Lizbert’s lover Eggabell Batternugget believes that Lizbert is trapped in some mysterious ruins. Trying to open the ruins triggers a natural disaster that destroys most of Snaxburg, but players proceed inside regardless. It’s then when players discover that Lizbert has transformed into a massive monster made up of all different kinds of Bugsnax. And she has some rather shocking news to share with everyone.
Throughout the whole game, players are led to believe that the Bugsnax are innocent, relatively friendly creatures. While there are some aggressive Bugsnax, most of them don’t bother the player and in fact flee from them. Bugsnax are considered a safe food source by the Grumpuses on Snaktooth Island, but Lizbert drops the bombshell that the Bugsnax are actually parasites that hope to completely transform their hosts into monsters like Lizbert.
Eggabell decides she can’t live without Lizbert, and so she fuses with her. The other Bugsnax start attacking Snaxburg, so the player character and other Grumpuses make their escape back to civilization. The player character explains the story to their boss, Clumby, without making mention of the Bugsnax themselves, but then loses their job. They are then offered a job to work with the Grumpus Filbo, who wants to run for mayor.
The Bugsnax story could end right there and many would be satisfied with that ending, but the game has a secret ending that hints at there being much more yet to be revealed. Players hear a phone conversation between Clumby and an evil-sounding voice, which makes it clear that they are aware of Snaktooth Island and will be keeping an eye on the player character and Filbo. The game then ends by revealing a Bugsnak has managed to make its way to the mainland, having stowed away with the Grumpuses when they made their escape to Snaktooth Island.
There are a few different loose threads that a potential Bugsnax sequel could work with. One is that the game could be about the player character attempting to get Filbo elected as mayor. Since the player character spends most of the original Bugsnax game helping Filbo restore Snaxburg, this wouldn’t be a stretch. Presumably, players would once again find themselves trying to win over various Grumpuses and bring them over to Filbo’s side.
The other loose thread is the mysterious person that Clumby was talking with. A Bugsnax 2 could reveal this individual’s identity, as well as their connection to Snaktooth Island and what exactly their goals are. It seems as though this person is being set up as an antagonist for Bugsnax 2. Then again, maybe Young Horses plans on revealing more about this character through some DLC or an expansion of some kind; as it stands, the studio has yet to reveal its future plans for Bugsnax at all.
And finally, the other loose thread is the arrival of a Bugsnak on the mainland. Considering what fans know about Bugsnax, it’s possible that this Bugsnak will wreak havoc, getting Grumpuses addicted to them and transforming them into food-based monstrosities. This could create a post-apocalyptic scenario that would be interesting to see followed up on in a sequel, if Young Horses ever decides to make one, of course.
Bugsnax is out now for PC, PS4, and PS5.
