File size has become a growing concern for gamers in recent times, both figuratively and literally. In a day and age where an increasing number of 100+GB games are placing a greater demand on their limited storage space, more and more gamers are keeping an eye out for those titles that manage a reasonable file size. Those gamers will be happy to know that Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will be especially lean, even with the extra content it will be bringing next month.
It goes without saying that the Nintendo Switch re-release of the 2013 platformer will be noticeably bigger than the original Wii U version. Along with the base game, the new Bowser’s Fury content will provide players with a brand new sandbox environment for players to explore, along with the ability for second players to control Bowser Jr., who has to team up with Mario to stop a kaiju-esque Bowser’s rampage.
Luckily, all of that old and new content, which also includes online co-op and amiibo support, likely won’t be too difficult for Switch owners to make room for. According to the game’s listing on the official Nintendo website, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will only take up 2.9GB of storage space. That’s not much bigger than the 1.7GB Wii U original, and for further comparison, it’s just over half the size of Mario’s last big title, Super Mario Odyssey, which weighs in at a still-modest 5.6GB.
That’s a rather impressive feat, especially with how common it is for most AAA Switch games to take up between 10-30GB, but it does suggest the Switch release might not boast too much in the way of new content. Nintendo has already confirmed that Bowser’s Fury will be a short experience, so it’s possible that it may only provide a few hours of additional gameplay at most, which could make paying full-price to buy 3D World again a less than ideal prospect for some potential buyers.
That being said, Nintendo has yet to detail the full extent of what the new standalone content will bring, and given how much content the original release of 3D World was able to fit within 1.7GB, it stands to reason that plenty more could potentially be fitted within the additional 1.2GB the Switch version is packing. With less than a month before the games comes out, players at the very least won’t have long to wait until they can find out for themselves.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury will launch on February 12 for the Nintendo Switch.
