The Sega CD was one of those consoles that seemed to a moderate moment in the spotlight during the 1990s but was unable to keep up with the new breed of hardware, such as Sony’s PlayStation. However, there were a slew of classic games which were given cult status, one of which was Digital Pictures’ full-motion video (FMV) game Ground Zero Texas which is getting an HD rerelease this year.
This remaster is being made by Screaming Villains, the team behind the recent HD releases of two other FMV games: Night Trap and Corpse Killer, both of which were also Sega CD games which came out in the early to mid 1990s. Fans who wish to relive the nostalgia, or who are curious about FMV games having never got to experience them the first time round, can pre-order Ground Zero Texas on January 22 with a special edition for PlayStation 4 including the original Sega CD version of the game as well as a bunch of extras.
Ground Zero Texas was originally released in November 1993 and follows the troubles of a small border town in Texas called El Cadron which has become overrun by aliens known as Reticulans. The player objective is to operate four cameras to stop the aliens before they destroy the town with much of the game being shot as a live-action interactive movie with real actors.
Full motion video games were short-lived, enjoying just a brief period in the early days of console gaming. Titles such as Night Trap were also instrumental in creating controversy in the media which paved the way for age rating board which required age certification on video games from then on (the first Mortal Kombat game also contributed).
Ground Zero Texas will be released March 2, 2021, and will be available for PC and PlayStation 4.
