Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is currently available for free on the Epic Games Store, but fans might have a hard time actually playing the game. Several players have received error codes after downloading EA’s Star Wars Battlefront 2, preventing them from playing the game at all.
Battlefront 2 became free on the Epic Games Store on January 14 and will remain free to download until January 21 at 4 p.m. The game has come a long way since its release became a flashpoint in the debate over loot boxes in video games, which eventually ended with several countries designating loot boxes as illegal gambling. The backlash caused EA to pull loot boxes from Battlefront 2, but despite the controversy, developer DICE continued to release free content expansions for the game in the form of new maps, characters, and vehicles.
Perhaps the new content was what made fans excited to pick the game up for free from the Epic Games Store. But the excitement likely turned to disappointment when several players were greeted with the error codes 623 and 918 after attempting to start the game. EA announced that the errors were caused by a massive influx of players that overloaded the game’s servers. Fortunately for players, EA is currently working on scaling up its servers to increase player capacity.
Battlefront 2 became free the same week that it was revealed that Ubisoft was working on an open world Star Wars game. This means that EA’s exclusive 10-year deal with Disney to be the only publisher allowed to release Star Wars games is evidently over, though Lucasfilm Games has confirmed that EA still has a good relationship with Disney and that it is currently working on a “number” of Star Wars projects. Disney has not officially said why the deal appears to be ending early, though it seems likely that it has something to do with Battlefront 2’s disastrous launch.
Despite the error code problems, now seems like a good time to pick up Battlefront 2. Since its release more than three years ago, EA and DICE have release a total of 25 content updates for the game, making Battlefront 2 the fully realized Star Wars experience that many fans had hoped it would be. It is also worth noting that the version that is free on the Epic Games Store is the Celebration Edition, which includes all previously releases cosmetics for heroes such as Rey, Darth Vader, and General Kenobi.
Star Wars: Battlefront 2 is available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
