In preparation for the big Kanto event coming in February, Pokemon GO has been holding special celebration events themed around the different generations of games. It started with the newest addition, Pokemon X & Y‘s Kalos region and has been running backwards, with the Sinnoh region celebrations set to end this Sunday.
This means that the next region being focused on is the Hoenn region from Gen 3, specifically the Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald games that were released on Game Boy Advance and later remade for the 3DS as Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.
The celebration will begin in Pokemon GO on Tuesday, January 19, at 10AM local time and finish on Sunday, January 24, at 8PM, which gives players online five days or so to take advantage of its unique offerings. Obviously, Pokemon native to the Hoenn region will appear more frequently in the wild, which include the three starters: Treecko, Torchic, and Mudkip. Niantic writes that lucky players may encounter a shiny Aron.
As for raids, Treecko, Torchic, Mudkip, Ralts, Aron, and Bagon will appear in one-star raids, while Breloom, Mawile, Grumpig, Spinda, and Absol will appear in three-star raids. Anyone who attempts a five-star raid will get to face one of the two cover Legendaries: Ruby‘s Groudon and Sapphire‘s Kyogre.
Players are encouraged to catch two of each of them, as doing so will reward players with 10 Groudon Candies and 10 Kyogre Candies respectively. The game will even be offering a free bundle containing three Remote Raid passes to help players challenge the two Legendaries. It will be available to download from the in-game shop on Tuesday.
Emerald‘s cover Legendary, Rayquaza, will also be available, but to encounter it, players will need to complete all the Timed Research tasks. Rayquaza will know the exclusive Charged Attack Hurricane move as well and come with 3000 XP and a Silver Pinap Berry. There’s a chance it will be shiny too. The full details of the event can be read on Niantic’s website.
Niantic has some big plans in store for the eventual Kanto event. For starters, it’s technically two different events, as players will be given the choice between Red and Green versions, with each version offering exclusive Pokemon, much like in the mainline games. Players will be tasked to try and collect all 150 original Pokemon, with some of them even having a chance to appear in their shiny forms for the first time ever.
This year marks the franchise’s 25th anniversary, so Nintendo is already prepping other major announcements for the rest of the year. Only yesterday, it was announced that Katy Perry will even be contributing to the celebrations with an original song.
Pokemon GO is available on Android and iOS.
