Pokemon Sword & Shield: Where To Catch Wimpod (& 9 Other Things To Know About It)

Introduced in the Sun and Moon generation, Wimpod is a Water and Bug-type Pokemon that starts off pretty weak but evolves into a strong member to have on your team. In Sword and Shield, they can be found in various locations. True to their Pokedex entries though, they are cowards and will need to be chased down or caught by surprise to battle and catch. However, it is all worth it in the end once your Wimpod evolves into a mighty Golisopod.

Of course, there are also those that just want to complete their Pokedex. To do that, every Pokemon, including Wimpod, needs to be caught.

10 Can Be Caught In Various Locations

Luckily for Sword and Shield players, Wimpod appears in various locations. All of the locations but one are weather dependent. The location where they spawn all the time is Galar Mine No. 2. That is the best place for catching them, as their spawn rate is 25 percent. At that location, their levels range from 20 to 24.

For higher level Wimpods, go to Hammerlocke Hills. That locations has Wimpods that range from level 29 to 31. However, whether they spawn is weather dependent there. It needs to be thunder and rain. During that weather, Wimpod spawn rates are at 35 percent. It is also important to know that these locations have both overworld spawns and non-overworld spawns.

9 The Only Pokemon With A Base Stat Total Of 230

Stat totals define the overall power of a Pokemon by adding their base Attack, Defense, Speed, Special Defense, and Special Attack together. For Wimpod, their stat total is quite low. To give an idea, the lowest best stat total of all time is 175 and belongs to Wishiwashi. The highest total belongs to Eternatus with 1,125.

With that in mind, Wimpod is a bit of a wimp. Quite true to its namesake.

8 It Is Considered To Be Quite Similar To Magikarp

Magikarp actually has a lot in common with Wimpod. Their stat totals are almost the same, with Magikarp’s being 244. They are both known to be weak but evolve into some of the strongest Pokemon of their generations. Also, they both are Water-type.

It is not unusual for this to occur, as many fans also found Feebas to be similar to Magikarp due to sharing all these traits as well. Together, Feebas, Magikarp, and Wimpod make a little underdog Water-type Pokemon family.

7 Evolves At Level 30

Thankfully, evolving Wimpod to Golisopod is not complicated (especially compared to other Pokemon). It doesn’t require happiness, a stone, or trading to evolve. It is done the typical way, through leveling up. Players in Sword and Shield do not have to wait that long either if they caught their Wimpods in the Galar Mine No 2. or Hammerlocke Hills since Wimpods in those locations can already be near level 30.

Competitive trainers will want to level Wimpods asap since their base stat is so atrocious. Once it evolves, the base stat goes up to 530.

6 Is One Of Three Pokemon To Have Both Bug And Water-Typing

Wimpod was not the first Water and Bug-type Pokemon. That title belongs to one often forgotten Wateer-type, Surskit from the third generation. Besides Wimpod and Surskit, there is also Araquanid. All three are Water and Bug-type. Perhaps after a couple more generations, they will release more Bug and Water-types to the point where players can design an entire Water and Bug-type team. After all, we are already halfway there.

5 Its Design Is Based On Various Isopods

This detail may not be too surprising since “isopod” is part of Wimpod’s name. It’s appearance seems to be a mix of a trilobite and pill bug. However, many players have compared its design to a horseshoe crab, which is not an isopod but an anthropod. All these creatures do reflect its Bug and Water-type combination.

Outside of design, fans have compared its behavior to silverfish due to how easily started it is.

4 Has The Unique Ability “Wimp Out”

No other Pokemon has this ability, making Wimpod quite unique. Wimp Out makes it so that Wimpod goes back into a players’ party if its HP reaches lower than 50 percent. While this can be useful when Wimpod is on the trainers’ side, it can be frustrating when trying to catch one. This ability also is used by wild Wimpods, so trainers should be sure not to lower its health too far or else it will automatically runaway.

There are strategies that will not trigger Wimp Out such as using Sandstorm, Hail, or making Wimpod lose health by hurting itself from the Confusion status afflication.

3 Is Weak To Electric, Flying, And Rock-Types

Type combinations such as Bug and Water give Wimpod a unique set of strengths and weaknesses. Due to its Water-typing, it won’t be weak to Fire like other Bug-types. However, it is still weak to Flying, Rock, and Electric-types. Due to its Water-typing, it can learn Ice-type moves to deal quickly with Flying. It’s evolution also can learn Ground-type moves to fight off Electric. Also, Rock is naturally weak to Water.

While players will ideally want a different Pokemon to fight of the types Wimpod is weak to, it is good to have some moves for when you are backed into a corner.

2 Is Resistant To Fire, Water, Fighting, Ground, And Steel-Types

Wimpod has more resistances than weaknesses, which is always ideal. Being resistant to Water and Fire is a big deal since all players often have one or both of those types on their teams. Ground, Fighting, and Steel are also great types to be resistant against since they are competitive favorites.

For a Pokemon known to be cowardly, it actually does not seem to have that much to worry about.

1 It’s Evolution Is Very Powerful

Golisopod has a Pokemon that competitive players have a positive outlook on due to its wide variety of moves and sheer strength in battle. Strategists often use this Pokemon for a revenge killer role since it can learn attacks like First Impression and Aqua Jet. It can also self heal with Leech Life and deal damage with Liquidation and Spikes.

So for those that ever face a Golisopod, be warned, it is not at all like a Wimpod despite their relation. It is a great choice for an all Water-type team.
