Red Dead Online: 5 Best Specialty Ammo (& 5 Worst) | Game Rant

When it comes to Red Dead Redemption IIplayers most likely want to know what items give them an advantage. Players might expect certain weapons to be more powerful and some tools give an advantage. There is another item that players might not be thinking about — different types of ammo.

Players might waste their money and buy a weapon that does not give a real advantage. The ammo types players can craft can help players in many different ways, either while fighting enemies or while hunting animals. Also a surprise, some times of ammo can affect the player’s abilities as well.

10 Worst – Poisonous Throwing Knife

If a player wants to make a poisonous throwing knife, they must search for some Oleander Sage. The new type of throwing knife can be crafted at a campfire, combining both the Oleander Sage and the throwing knife. With this new type of weapon, players know an enemy hit by their knife will perish.

While it might seem like a worthy weapon, the enemy would have died either way. The throwing knife also cannot be found on dead enemies, meaning players will need to go find Oleander each time they want to create the item.

9 Best – Buckshot Incendiary

Buckshot incendiary ammo is available for the shotgun, allowing the player to light multiple enemies on fire. The ammo cannot be bought from a store, but the pamphlet to create it can be found at Copperhead Landing. It takes one regular bullet and moonshine to create this special ammunition.

The ammo also acts like a normal shotgun shell, not causing a lot of the background to catch on fire. When enemies crowd together in a hallway, this ammo type is the best way to take care of them.

8 Worst – Varmint Ammo

The varmint ammo can only be used for the varmint rifle. The rifle is good for hunting small animals, but there are other types of ammo that do not cost the player money. Players can loot ammo from random people, but otherwise, the ammo can be bought at stores.

With the rifle being good for small animals, it should come as no surprise it is worthless against enemies. Players will most likely shoot an enemy 10 times before they get a kill. The only upside to this weapon is the shooting speed, being useful in a large group.

7 Best – Small Game Arrows

A small game arrow is like the varmint ammo, but it can be created for free. A player needs to have a regular arrow, a flight feather, and a regular shotgun shell to make the arrow.

The arrow can now be used to kill a small animal and keep the carcass at a three-star rating. This gives the carcass a price boost when they are sold at stores.

6 Worst – Fire Arrow

Fire arrows might seem like fun, but they can be dangerous during missions. Hitting an enemy can cause no problems, but missing and hitting an object can. A building can start to catch on fire or a field can start burning, potentially causing problems for allies in the mission.

Even outside of missions, players might accidentally light themselves on fire. For any player that wants to take the risk, all they need is an arrow, animal fat, and a flight feather to craft this arrow.

5 Best – Split Point

Split point ammo can be crafted by the player, being used by pistols, revolvers, and rifles. The ammo causes Dead Eye to drain slower than normal, while also doing a little extra damage. With a big group of enemies, the extra Dead Eye can come in handy.

The ammo being used by almost all types of weapons also comes in handy. Players can slow their Dead Eye consumption with a majority of the weapons they use, giving an advantage in a firefight.

4 Worst – Poison Arrows

A lot like the poison knives, poison arrows can only be crafted by the player. The pamphlet for this item can be found at Fences around the cities. Players will still need to find Oleander, but they will also need to have a flight feather with them as well.

Shooting an enemy with a poison arrow will definitely kill them, but there is a chance the enemy will die from the arrow itself. For an ammo type that needs Oleander, the payoff does not seem worth it.

3 Best – Dynamite Arrow

The dynamite arrow can be used to clear a crowd of enemies. Even if it does not kill the enemy, they will be rolling on the ground missing limbs. It is effective when attacking enemies from a far range, as being too close can hurt the player.

To create these arrows, players must find a pamphlet at the Wapiti Indian Reservation. Players need to make sure they have a regular arrow, a flight feather, and dynamite in their inventory when they go to craft the item. After the arrow is crafted, have fun wreaking havoc on anyone who gets in Arthur’s way.

2 Worst – Explosive Ammo

Every type of gun can use explosive ammo, with the power depending on the size of the gun. With that being said, sometimes explosive ammo can cause the player more trouble than help. An innocent bystander might get hit by an explosive bullet, causing the law to attack the player.

The ammo can also only be crafted, requiring the player to have an express bullet and animal fat. The shotgun explosive ammo requires a pamphlet, which can be found in New Austin.

1 Best – High Velocity

High-velocity ammo can be bought or looted from enemies, being available for pistols, revolvers, and rifles. The ammo is unique, as it can be used to pierce multiple enemies at once. When enough people are lined up, the player has the chance to kill or wound multiple attackers at once.

If the player is lucky, it can also pierce multiple animals. While it might lower the quality, it can help get more animal skins. It also comes in handy when fighting enemies in a crowded area.
