When Bandai Namco’s Ace Combat 7 released on January 18th, 2019, many fans thought of the game as a return to its series form. Following the spin-off Assault Horizon and the free-to-play Infinity, Ace Combat 7 marked the return of the main series for the first time since 2007’s Ace Combat 6.
Today marks the second anniversary of Ace Combat 7, a title that has received developer support throughout 2020. To commemorate the occasion, Bandai Namco will release 10 fighter skins and 10 emblems on January 19th. All of the fighter skins featured in the “2nd Anniversary Update” makes references to previous Ace Combat games and glitches.
One of the skins, the “X-02S Glowing,” referred to a glitch within Ace Combat 7 that would cause certain planes to glow after applying a specific skin. The “Phoenix” skin for the F-22A Raptor and the “Scarface” skin for the Su-37 Terminator is based on the flagship planes from Air Combat and Ace Combat 2 respectively. The year 2020 was also an important year for Ace Combat fans as it marked the 25th anniversary of the first game, Air Combat in 1995. Due to COVID-19, however, the celebration was postponed, yet referenced by producer Manabu Shimomoto. With the second anniversary of Ace Combat 7, long time fans of the series will appreciate the attention to detail given by the developers as the series continues to strive.
