In order to avoid litigation, Warner Bros. and Legendary have come together in order to forge a new agreement over the release of monster crossover film Godzilla Vs. Kong. The two parties started up a new negotiation shortly after Warner Bros. announced that all its films would be headed to HBO Max in 2021, a move that surprised Legendary and left them feeling a bit shortchanged. Now, however, the two parties have announced that the film will be released to theaters and HBO Max a bit earlier than expected, and have provided a small teaser for fans in the meantime.
Rumors that the two parties were in talks had been swirling for a while, as when Warner Bros. announced the HBO Max simultaneous release, Legendary was caught off guard by the news. As the company had not been fully informed of this decision, they told Warner to renegotiate, or face a potential lawsuit.
Thankfully the two companies have indeed worked out their differences, and as part of that deal the film has actually had its release date pushed up. Godzilla Vs. Kong will now be released to both theaters and HBO Max on March 26, as opposed to the original date of May 21. This is exciting news for eager fans, but it has also raised a new question: When will the first trailer finally drop?
The answer to that question is still up in the air, unfortunately, but that doesn’t mean there’s been nothing to chew on, however small. A recent promo for HBO Max has released, showcasing clips of all the Warner Bros. films that will be coming to the service the same day they hit theaters, and as one of those films, Godzilla Vs. Kong also got a brief moment in the spotlight.
In the advertisement, titled “Same Day Premieres,” the very first clip is of the iconic gorilla himself decking Godzilla straight in the face, which is about as straightforward as one can get when it comes to making intentions clear. It’s not much, but it certainly sets the mood, and it looks as though the film intends to deliver on its main promise of having a big gorilla fight a big lizard, which is all it has to do, really.
Thankfully fans won’t have to wait too long to see the full thing in action, as it will be available in full on HBO Max when the movie finally releases in March. Hopefully it won’t be a huge wait until the first trailer either, to capitalize on the hype for the new release date.
Godzilla Vs. Kong will release on March 26, 2021.
