With the most recent trailer for New Pokémon Snap, fans got a look at some of the game’s features. Although they didn’t go too in-depth, the scenes still provided many exciting tidbits for prospective buyers and speculators alike. Overall, it seems like a vast upgrade from the original Pokémon Snap released over twenty years ago.
Its April 30 release date may feel far off, but it at least gives players a chance to pore over the finer details of the trailer and look forward to experiencing the game firsthand. With new characters to meet and new Pokémon to photograph, fans of the original game have much to appreciate.
10 Great Graphics
When comparing the N64 to the modern Switch, it seems obvious for the graphic quality to differ. However, BANDAI NAMCO went above and beyond. Everything has a vibrancy to it that practically begs players to photograph everything possible. Some fans even compare these graphics to the ones present in Sword and Shield, wishing that the ones in this spin-off game were also in the mainline game. Regardless, the newly-rendered models and stunning scenery will make for some captivating photography.
9 More Locations
No official word exists for the exact number of locations in this sequel’s region. However, the newest trailer showcased a plethora of locales in their transition screens alone. Beaches and waterside areas make up a large portion, as one would expect on an island. Interestingly, players will also travel to desert and jungle areas, as well as deciduous forests and misty woods. This widespread makes sense when considering the diversity of the Pokémon themselves. Hopefully, some more far-reaching locations like the volcano from the first game make a return!
8 An Improved Camera
Twenty years of advancing technology mean tons of upgrades to the protagonist’s weapon of choice in this game. The camera shown in the trailer looks like a slim Pokédex that pops its lens out when ready.
The camera has the ability to take at least 80 pictures per level, meaning players will have plenty of opportunities to capture their favorite moments while exploring the vast terrains. If the developers want the game to feel fully modern, they may even enable features like filters and resolution adjustments.
7 Photo Sharing
The Nintendo Switch had an update in late 2020 that allowed for photo sharing on social media platforms. People could share screenshots of their favorite games on Facebook, Twitter, and the like. With this in mind, it seems almost inevitable for the pictures taken in New Pokémon Snap to receive extra attention. The scoring system from the previous game also looks like it will make a return; depending on how engaged the developers want to get, they may end up hosting competitions to see who can upload the highest-scoring image.
6 Extra Modes
The campgrounds where the protagonist first enters look sparse at first, but the housing looks more than large enough to host a variety of neat gadgets. Professor Mirror and his assistant Rita may very well have some extra projects for players to enjoy.
The first Pokémon Snap only had seven tracks on which players could ride, and Professor Oak’s laboratory had limited interactivity. Outside of the main campaign, players should get to do more than check their album in the upcoming sequel.
5 More Pokémon
The first game came out before the release of Gold and Silver, meaning the game only had the original 151 Pokémon to work with. Of those, just over sixty made their way into the various landscapes. In this newest addition, however, over 200 of these creatures will reportedly make an appearance. With over triple the amount of Pokémon, players will have a much longer ride in their new all-terrain vehicle. Hopefully, many fan favorites will find their way into the game.
4 Dynamic Poses
From a sleepy Liepard to a Heracross and Pinsir locked in combat, this game shows off a key feature that makes Pokémon photography so interesting to many. The dynamic nature of these poses, ones not seen in the base game, make these creatures feel much more alive and wild than their main-game counterparts. Some older fans may remember Pikachu riding on top of an Electrode, or a Magmar and Charmander fighting over food. These kinds of moments, and many more, should make their return in the sequel.
3 An In-depth Story
The first game didn’t have much of a plot aside from Professor Oak trying to learn more about the Pokémon present on the island. In this new area, called the Lental region, a strange “Illumina” phenomenon seems to affect certain Pokémon.
As players explore and photograph more of the area, they may encounter secrets as to the origins of this strange occurrence. Plot can be secondary to some players, especially in spin-off titles such as this one, but others will appreciate the added content.
2 A Day/Night Cycle
With the fascinating details put into the rest of the game, it wouldn’t be surprising to learn that some fans might have missed out on one key feature present in the trailers. While many of the scenes take place in the morning hours, it seems there will be a day/night cycle present in the game. Players will get to return to old levels to find different Pokémon in the evening and at night. Some Pokémon that were lively in the morning may even be found sleeping later, such as a pair of Onix seen in a photo toward the end of the trailer.
1 More Interactivity
The largest appeal of the Pokémon Snap games is the ability to interact with wild Pokémon in a natural setting. Players can take a break from battling and enjoy seeing their favorite monsters in their natural habitats. The first game only had three options to interact with their surroundings; Pester Balls, apples, and the Poké Flute teased Pokémon out of their hiding places and made them strike impressive poses. In the sequel, players hope to have all these options make a return, with a few additional tricks to get even more intriguing shots.
