Fan Reimagines Super Smash Bros. Fighters as Marvel and DC Superheroes

Nintendo’s Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has a huge collection of characters from all across video game history, and that roster continues to grow. Fans recently took to social media to talk about the first anniversary of Fire Emblem: Three House‘s Byleth joining Smash Bros., capping off Ultimate‘s first Fighters Pass, and Final Fantasy 7‘s Sephiroth is the most recent addition as of this writing. That has inspired many an artist to offer their own takes on the characters, and Twitter user eternalflamebry recently kicked off an ambitious project to do just that.

Super Smash Bros. roster drawing projects are not uncommon, and in fact artist Daniel Cortes began to draw every Smash Bros. character in the style of Cuphead last year. The “Super Smash Heroes” project by eternalflamebry is similar, but instead aims to recreate every fighter as a Marvel or DC Comics superhero with whom they share some traits.

This ongoing project was announced January 9, and has encapsulated six fighters thus far: Mario as Superman, Donkey Kong as Hulk, Link as Green Arrow, Samus as Iron Man, Dark Samus as Venom, and Yoshi as Plastic Man. Each Super Smash Bros. Ultimate character has been split into a comic universe based on their official number, and eternalflamebry plans to upload new images on Mondays and Saturdays, so fans of his work should keep an eye out.

Before this, eternalflamebry reimagined Disney Heroines as video game characters, for instance drawing Moana in the style of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. However, “Super Smash Heroes” is considered a successor to his “Super Smash Styles” project, which retooled the (current) roster of 85 fighters into unique styles – such as Ken in the look of Johnny Bravo. That will continue with the next three DLC fighters, he said, and after Sephiroth came to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate he was redrawn in the style of the shonen anime Bleach.

It’s unknown which franchises will fill the remaining DLC slots. However, that has not stopped people from trying to predict new Super Smash Bros. fighters, or express an interest in who they may be interested in seeing. Former Halo composer Martin O’Donnell even wants to help add Master Chief following Microsoft reps Banjo and Kazooie, as well as Minecraft‘s Steve.

Given the scope of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate‘s roster, not including cut content such as Dragonite originally being a summon using the Poke Ball, the possibilities are seemingly endless. This should give fans room to speculate until Nintendo makes its official announcements, and artists like eternalflamebry will no doubt be waiting to see what comes next.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now on Nintendo Switch.
