Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is one of the stand-out cult classic RPGs of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 generation. The game released to positive critical reception in 2012 and sold well, but due to its high budget it failed to break even. Kingdom of Amalur‘s developer 38 Studios went bankrupt only three months after the game’s release. Last year THQ Nordic released a remaster known as Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning, and today the publisher has announced that the 2020 remaster will be making its way to Nintendo Switch this March.
The revival of the Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning came as a surprise to fans after the game fell into obscurity after the closure of 38 Studios, with the rights to the franchise reverting to the state of Rhode Island, which funded a large portion of the game’s development alongside original publisher EA. THQ Nordic acquired the rights to the franchise in 2018, announcing a remaster of the original game shortly after.
While the remaster was met with lukewarm reception upon its release in September 2020, with many claiming it did very little to improve the game outside of polishing its visuals, THQ Nordic has announced that it is releasing a brand new expansion for the original game later in 2021 known as Fatesworn. The expansion will include new questlines and brand new content, added to the game almost 10 years after its initial release.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is a beloved RPG among enthusiasts of the genre. The game combines the writing of beloved fantasy and sci-fi author R.A. Salvatore, designs from Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, and music from legendary video game composer Grant Kirkhope. The game should be right at home among the Nintendo Switch’s pantheon of both Japanese and western RPGs.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning will release on Nintendo Switch on March 16th 2021. The game is currently available for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
