Video game developer Ninja Theory is looking to hire a number of positions as 2021 continues to move forward. The studio is looking to hire talent across multiple disciplines, as it has multiple AAA projects in the pipeline.
The UK-based game studio is perhaps best known for its work on titles such as Heavenly Sword, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, and the divisive DmC: Devil May Cry. Ninja Theory was one of five studios acquired by Microsoft back in 2018, meaning the job listings are for Xbox-exclusive projects.
According to Ninja Theory’s website, there are 14 open positions as of this writing. The roles span a variety of disciplines, including artists, animators, melee combat designers, level designers, sound designers, and more. While no IP is listed, it’s no secret what the award-winning developer is working on. Some of the developer’s upcoming games include Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, set in Iceland, and the ultra-realistic horror game Project: Mara. All of the recently posted jobs will allow employees to work either from home or the company’s newly constructed headquarters in Cambridge.
Although it’s just speculation, many of the new hires may be geared toward the aforementioned Project: Mara. Ninja Theory’s most recent “Developer Diary” showcases Project: Mara‘s realistic graphics thanks to cutting edge capture technology. In the diary, Ninja Theory’s Chief Creative Officer Tameem Antoniades said the title will be a concise yet innovative project for the studio, using a series of ambitious, state-of-the-art visual techniques.
Conversely, the job listings could be for the highly anticipated Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. Previously teased for a 2021 release, the Unreal Engine 5-built Hellblade 2 could be seeking some extra hands to see through the later stages of the game’s development. It’s hard to blame Ninja Theory, especially after seeing fellow AAA developer CD Projekt Red’s ongoing debacle surrounding Cyberpunk 2077.
Both Project: Mara and the Hellblade sequel are connected to The Insight Project. For those who don’t know, The Insight Project is Ninja Theory’s effort with mental health professionals to study and treat mental health problems through game design. This could be the reasoning behind both upcoming titles featuring an emphasis on “mental” aspects.
Whatever the purpose of these new job listings, they should still be seen as a positive development. In addition to new opportunities for those working in the industry, the gaming community at large will likely interpret the jobs as a sign that Ninja Theory is progressing in its development. The studio is promising big things with its next few releases, and gamers everywhere are hoping Ninja Theory will deliver.
