Early Zelda: Ocarina of Time Build Let Link Turn Into Navi

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was released two decades ago and has kept gamers speculating over rumors and theories ever since its original launch. Just recently, a newly discovered demo build for the game demonstrates early versions of in-game locations, equipment, and even the ability to transform into Link’s partner Navi, a mechanic not present in the final release.

This newly surfaced Ocarina of Time demo, originally screened way back at Spaceworld in 1997, was found inside of a Nintendo 64 development cartridge being used to store data for F-Zero X. Unfortunately, upon closer investigation, the cartridge seemed to have written over much of the data that was originally stored inside it, however, what has managed to survive to this day is an intriguing reveal into what was cut from the classic Zelda adventure.

The video shows some familiar elements to seasoned veterans of the original game, such as an early concept of Kakariko Village, but the most intriguing element is the unused ability which would allow Link to transform into his fairy companion Navi. Link would have accomplished this by utilizing an item called the Soul Medallion, which upon activation, would provide Link with useful new skills such as the power to fly through the air while still retaining the ability to use his regular equipment. The Soul medallion was not the only omitted power-up as others would have let Link cast ice and fire spells (similar to the Magic Rods from A Link to the Past).

This is oddly not the first time that F-Zero X data files have revealed unused concepts in Nintendo games, begging the question what other major changes were made for Ocarina of Time during production. In the final game, Link collects several medallions upon completing a variety of themed dungeons scattered around the world Hyrule, but in the official release these are simply collectibles to advance the narrative and nothing more. It appeared that Nintendo’s original concept for the medallions was to provide them with more in-game use upon being acquired, perhaps to add more excitement for the player and satisfaction for their efforts, but the reason for these ideas being scrapped is unclear at this time.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was a massive game in scope for its time and the development itself has become its own legend as the years go on. As more and more information is revealed or leaked to the public, such as original concept art for Ocarina of Time, fans get a better idea of what could have been a very different adventure.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is available for Nintendo 64.
