GameStop Will Have PS5, Xbox Series X Consoles Tomorrow

GameStop announced it will have the latest consoles in stock as of tomorrow, January 21. GameStop‘s restock includes all three major systems: the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, as well as the Nintendo Switch.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X have proven popular since the launch of both consoles in November 2020. Microsoft’s Xbox Series X beat Sony to the punch, releasing on November 10, while Sony’s device launched two days later. Gamers looking to get their hands on a new console have had a hard time securing one from anywhere since then, with stock quickly going in and out among various retailers.

The announcement was made via GameStop’s official Twitter account, which said a limited number of PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Nintendo Switch bundles will go on sale at some point tomorrow. The tweet doesn’t specify a certain time, but says the account will let players know as soon as they do. It also suggests players turn on notifications just in case, and judging by how Target’s restocks sold out immediately earlier today, its probably a good idea. It should also be noted that availability will be strictly on the company’s website, rather than any of its brick-and-mortar locations.

The blink-and-you’ll-miss-it nature of new console stock has been an ongoing issue since the systems launched a few months ago. The shortage is so severe that it has led to the heads of both PlayStation and Xbox making public statements regarding the issue. Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said weeks after the launch that “everything is sold,” while Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently promised more Xbox Series X consoles are constantly being built in an effort to meet demand.

While it lasts, the new stock of systems should prove a boon to GameStop, which has been struggling as a business in recent years. Its shares did temporarily spike upon the announcement of a multi-year partnership with Microsoft, but growth over the 2020 holiday season was reportedly slower than expected. This could be due to the ongoing supply issues with the PS5 and Xbox Series X, botched console pre-orders that may not show up until April, or the widely-criticized TikTok dance competition for employees to get more hours last November.

While the lack of console supply has fervently increased demand, some industry experts are seeing this as a good sign for gaming as a whole. In fact, a recent survey suggests that one in five people bought their first console during 2020, which translates to the trending popularity of video games as a whole. Hopefully stock issues will soon become a thing of the past at places like GameStop, that way gamers everywhere can enjoy the next generation of consoles.
