The 10 Smartest Witchers, According To Lore | Game Rant

It’s rare for a witcher to die on his bed and by that kind of culture, you would think that they’re not the brightest in their world. It’s somewhat true. Witchers aren’t as wise as kings or as clever as mages in the Witcher lore be it for the games, the show, or the books. In fact, they tend to get manipulated often by more intelligent individuals.

Still, that doesn’t mean they’re all dimwits with parental issues who are only well-versed in communicating with violence. Some witchers have stood out among the rest for not only being great at their job but also for being sensible, cultured, and venerable monster slayers. If you don’t believe it, then here they are, witchers who would probably give even Yennefer a headache.

10 Geralt of Rivia

Well, we didn’t exactly specify what the cause of headache would be for Yennefer but regardless, Geralt definitely ticks all the smart witcher checklist boxes. He’s well-versed in art and has a deep capacity for critical thinking unlike most of his bloodthirsty and instinctive peers.

For some reason, Geralt also seems to be a favorite of court nobility because he tends to fit in no matter how antisocial he acts or how much he hates them. Moreover, Geralt’s knowledge in monster-slaying is quite unparalleled at least in the video games. It’s a shame his intelligence gets neutralized when he “socializes” with certain sorceresses.

9 Vesemir

Vesemir is who Geralt probably wished he was when it comes to sagacity. All his students look up to him as their father-figure and even someone as rebellious and angsty as Lambert respected Vesemir. That speaks much about Vesemir’s leadership skills and fatherly nature.

He might not be the same tenacious and skilled witcher he was back in his prime, but Vesemir’s knowledge was the most valuable among the witchers of the School of the Wolf. One also has to factor in the emotional intelligence of which Vesemir seems to have in spades.

8 Jad Karadin

It’s common knowledge that witchers usually die in the line of duty yet no one among them seemed to want to do anything about that. That’s why someone like Jad Karadin was special. He’s one of the few witchers who wisened up and strayed off from the pack.

Jad Karadin then became an established semi-immortal man who plans to die in his bed and live a fulfilling life with his wife and children. He also seems to be doing great at being a merchant and moved on from his witcher life. That alone makes him a more accomplished individual compared to other witchers who don’t know how to do anything else.

7 Letho Of Gulet

You don’t find many witchers who can outwit and outplay sorceresses, much less Philippa Eilhart. Yet, Letho of Gulet managed to do such an incredible feat to the Lodge of Sorceresses. He played them and even pinned the regicides to them while furthering his own agenda though he had to help Nilfgaard in the process.

Letho also took advantage of the fact that many elites and nobles took him for an oaf when in reality, he’s smarter than Geralt of Rivia. Even someone like Geralt couldn’t have planned multiple royal assassinations and carry them out with success. If only he could get his own game…

6 Ciri

Speaking of another witcher who might also get their own game or are eligible for one, Ciri is a strong contender. Technically, she’s not a full witcher since she didn’t undergo mutations but she was trained by Geralt and Vesemir, plus her Elder Blood gives her a free pass.

As for her intelligence, Ciri has proven herself in the video game to be an effective Empress of the majority of the world. She’s about as wise as her father Emhyr but with the added benevolence. Besides, she also became Avallac’h’s student and a prodigy of the Lodge; she pretty much received the best education possible for anyone in the lore.

5 Gezras Of Leyda

Whether you consider Gwent canon or not, it’s still part of the Witcher lore and even introduced some interesting characters and witchers. Gezras of Leyda is one such individual who could rival Geralt of Rivia when it comes to tragedy. He was born a half-elf and disowned by his family only to become a witcher guinea pig and dissected by mages.

Gezras rose up from that predicament, killed his school’s oppressive and unethical mages, and formed the Dyn Marv mobile training caravan with his Cat School peers. He even set up a haven for witchers with extreme mutations rejected by other schools, not unlike a certain mutant from Marvel comics.

4 Erland Of Larvik

Witcher school founders or pioneers are often among the best, just as Gezras of Leyda proved. Another legendary witcher would be Erland of Larvik. He’s a first-generation witcher and the founder of the Griffin School. As fans know by now, the Griffin School is a sect of witchers that focus on magic.

Therefore, their school tends to have more intelligent members who also touted knightly values and foresight. Erland of Larvik embodied such qualities and even propelled the School of the Griffin into one of the most powerful sub-factions which played a huge part in eradicating most of the monsters, making them near-extinct.

3 Elgar

Not much is known about Elgar but he’s from the School of the Wolf, same as Geralt and Vesemir and he was also responsible for making diagrams for powerful witcher gear. These would then be later used by future witchers.

Players have him to thank for the scattered diagrams of witcher gear throughout the game. It might not sound like much but Elgar certainly had the foresight to come up with such an idea and the smithing and engineering knowledge necessary for such gear. Without him, Geralt wouldn’t have become an overpowered city guard gut blender.

2 Keldar

Since witchers in the School of the Griffin held themselves in higher regard compared to most other witcher schools, they had to have the strictest teachers. Keldar filled in for that role and did it with flying colors. He’s the Vesemir of the Griffin School and was responsible for the monster knowledge of trainees.

Keldar pretty much acted like a terror teacher to his students, often mocking them when they gave wrong or no answers in quizzes or tests. Seeing as Keldar was chosen to uphold Griffin School values, he’s more than likely to be highly intelligent.

1 Ivar Evil-Eye

Ivar Evil-Eye is the legendary founder of the School of the Viper. If Letho’s traits are anything to go by, then we can all assume that cleverness is one of their main qualities. Ivar represented that well enough as he actually founded the Viper School to secretly deal with the Wild Hunt. That’s why Letho was able to save Geralt from the Wild Hunt without much problem.

He even endured a special mutation for his eye and was able to peer into other worlds and see specters. Ultimately, Ivar wasn’t able to fulfill what his witcher school was established for but he knew their secrets and movements very well. Unfortunately, he was long dead when Geralt achieved what Ivar always wanted.
