Jeremy Renner is in many ways the sleeper hit of Marvel Cinematic Universe, going from the butt of jokes in the first Avengers to a beloved regular by the time of Endgame. As Hawkeye, Renner, using only a bow and arrow, managed to pull his weight alongside supersoldiers, magic wielders, and literal gods, while remaining a lighthearted and charismatic presence that wasn’t afraid to poke fun at the ridiculousness of his own concept.
So it’s no wonder that the actor himself isn’t afraid to have a little fun too. As part of his training for future appearances as Hawkeye, the actor needed to practice his bow and arrow routine, but ran into the unfortunate complication of an ongoing pandemic. So what was a Hollywood star to do?
Easy: the actor grabbed a toy bow and got to work, running around the house, practicing his stance and form, and letting loose arrows wherever he went. In a video posted to Twitter, Renner showed off his skills by striking all sorts of superhero poses and showcasing his magnificent archery talent to the world. It’s a short clip, but it provides a fun little look at what it’s like to train for a role like Hawkeye when your actual archery options are limited.
It’s a humanizing moment and a pleasant reminder that there are still ways to pass the time in lockdown for those who aren’t afraid of looking a bit silly. Renner’s practice in particular was likely motivated by his upcoming appearance in the Hawkeye Disney Plus show. The project is set to feature Renner as Hawkeye training Kate Bishop to be a hero.
While it’s not known exactly how much the series will focus on Hawkeye as opposed to Kate, it seems likely that Renner will be taking on a mentor role as the MCU gets ready to pass the mantle down to a younger generation of heroes. That said, there’ll still be plenty of time for Hawkeye to prove that even the Avengers could use a guy with a bow and arrow.
In the meantime fans will likely get a kick out of the Twitter post, getting to see what the archery looks like before all the costumes, makeup, and special effects. Hopefully, that training pays off when Hawkeye finally returns to the spotlight later this year.
Hawkeye will hit Disney Plus later this year.
