Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Will Fix Thermal Scope Glitch

The latest Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War glitch sees thermal scopes not functioning properly, though it seems that players will not need to put up with this issue for long. Treyarch has already shared news of an incoming fix and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War players can expect the problem to be solved with the next major update.

While Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has previously struggled with reticles, the previous changes saw sniper scopes being overpowered as opposed to failing to function altogether. The thermal scope issue sees the reticle remaining the same as it normally would, though the actual thermal effect is nowhere to be seen. Missing from the weapon entirely, the thermal scope fails to carry out its only purpose whenever this bug occurs.

A video posted by Redditor Creamed_Jemima shows the odd Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War issue in action, with the player diving into the water on the Combined Arms map Armada. Upon aiming in with their sniper rifle, however, Creamed_Jemima sees that their thermal scope is missing its ability to detect heat signatures. Despite aiming in and out with his gun several times, nothing that the player does in the clip seems to fix the reticle’s confusing new problem.

While there is no known cause for the glitch, a few theories include the player aiming while diving into the water or an accidental function of the jammer equipment. Regardless of what the problem is, though, it does not seem like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s player base will be suffering from the issue much longer. In a post from Treyarch community manager FoxhoundFPS, the studio is “tracking a fix for this,” ensuring that the thermal bug’s time is numbered. No cause for the bug is shared, though FoxhoundFPS does thank the player for providing context via the clip.

While FoxhoundFPS only mentions that the glitch will be patched out “in a future major update,” players should have a good idea if when this update will be coming to the game. With Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War seeing major content drops on February 4, such as the fan-favorite Express multiplayer map and the new Firebase Z Zombies experience, it would make sense to see some major stability fixes arrive on or just ahead of this date.

While Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will be seeing more content added soon, the game clearly still needs time to reach the typical level of polish seen from games in the series. Though a fix is on the way, players may want to hold off on the killer combo of smoke grenades and thermal scopes until the next update arrives.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
