Jurassic World: Dominion is set to conclude the trilogy that began with Jurassic World, but it also has its eyes set on the franchise’s past as well. Not only will the film have several characters returning from the original trilogy, director Colin Trevorrow has said that the project will serve not only as the final installment of the World trilogy, but also as a culmination of all six Jurassic Park films.
The original Jurassic World, while set in the same universe as the previous films, told a mostly self-contained story that didn’t rely on too many callbacks. Featuring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard as employees at a new dinosaur park, the first film saw a familiar dinosaur outbreak plot that took a great deal of inspiration from the first film. The second film, Fallen Kingdom, featured a more original story where they return to the park to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from on incoming volcanic eruption.
Jurassic World was quite successful when it came out, becoming the first film to ever earn $500 million on its opening weekend, and pulled in big profits for the studio. Fallen Kingdom also pulled in a solid return, becoming the 35th film in history to cross the $1 billion mark for its total box office earnings. So naturally, there are high hopes and expectations for the third and final installment.
As that film gets closer and closer to release, the marketing has emphasized a connection to the previous trilogy that the last two had mostly left in the realm of cameos and Easter eggs. This time, however, Sam Neill and Laura Dern are scheduled to reprise their roles from the original films, alongside Jeff Goldblum, who also had a brief appearance in Fallen Kingdom.
In various statements, however, Trevorrow has made it clear that the returning cast is more than just a wink to the audience, and fans should expect some significant developments. “I think people may be underestimating the size and importance of Laura Dern and Sam Neill and Jeff Goldblum’s characters in this movie; it is very much an ensemble,” he discussed during a 2020 roundtable.
As for Dominion‘s connection to the original trilogy, the director had this to say: “When you watch Dominion, you really feel like you are learning how much of a story that first set of movies was and how everything that happened in those movies actually informs what ultimately is able to happen in this.” So fans should keep an eye out for the connections between the new Jurassic World films and the original trilogy when the film finally hits theaters.
Jurassic World: Dominion is scheduled for a 2022 release.
