Mortal Kombat Creator Ed Boon Shares Funny Shang Tsung Bernie Sanders Mitten Meme

Every four years on January 20, the United States holds an inauguration ceremony for the newest President complete with speeches, parades, and more. While new President Joe Biden understandably received most of the attention at the event this year, former Presidential candidate and current Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders once again managed to catch the attention of the public including fans of Mortal Kombat.

While Sanders has been no stranger to memes over the past few years, the Senator was photographed at Biden’s ceremony sitting in a chair, legs crossed with his hands also draped over his knee in wool mittens. Fans instantly ran with this image of a clearly warm and relaxed Sanders, photoshopping it over all sorts of places. One individual named Murdoink took the image of a seated Sanders and realized that he could make an appearance in the classic fighting game, Mortal Kombat.

The image shows Scorpion and Kano battling it out inside of the Throne Room arena. In the background is a large throne which typically showed the old man version of Shang Tsung. However, Murdoink decided to remove Shang Tsung and instead place Bernie Sanders in his seated position from the inauguration day ceremony. The photoshop came out so well that it quickly became a viral sensation, even catching the attention of Mortal Kombat creative director Ed Boon, who added that he almost completely missed Sanders sitting on the throne.

Fans followed up that image with more Mortal Kombat inspired pictures photoshopped with a sitting Sanders. Levemir Fan Account posted a similar image of Sanders sitting high up on The Courtyard arena, again replacing Shang Tsung.

Another individual places Sanders on a bench waiting for a subway train while Sub-Zero and Scorpion battle it out from the 2011 Mortal Kombat game.

Others have modified the previous meme of Sanders asking for support in his brown coat against a snowy landscape which has been customized countless times for a variety of games.

In addition to these memes, Boon was also inundated with all sorts of DLC requests for Mortal Kombat 11, something that typically happens anytime he posts anything from his Twitter account. While Mileena and Rain fans finally got their wish last year alongside Rambo, the big question on many fans minds going forward is if the Ultimate Edition is the final step for the popular game. For now NetherRealm hasn’t confirmed or denied anything, though Ed Boon has again posted a few mysterious Tweets that MK fans have taken to mean more characters could be added down the line. Boon did similar things for most DLC fighters, posting cryptic messages which were later deciphered by fans ahead of the character announcements. For now, fans will have to wait and see.

Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
