New Pokemon Snap Gets Japan-Exclusive Commercial | Game Rant

Nintendo seems to be in full swing with promoting New Pokemon Snap. After a trailer launched six days ago revealing the title’s April 30, 2021 release date, the company released a Japanese commercial which seems to be aimed at younger audiences.

Pokemon Snap centers around taking photographs of various Pokemon and consulting with the local professor. Despite being about photography, Pokemon Snap functions more as an on-rails shooter in which the player is railroaded through various environments while they focus on taking photographs. The player can also throw food or other items in order to encourage new Pokemon to come out, open up new paths, force Pokemon to evolve, and more. Clear photos and those with multiple Pokemon are just some examples that granted the player a better grade at the end of each level in the original game.

As for the commercial itself, it’s fairly short – only fifteen seconds long, but gets its message across. It starts with a woman and a young boy in safari outfits before flashes of gameplay are shown, including some previously seen clips of Pokemon like Grookey and Pikachu. From there, they open the gates behind them to show the on-rails system that New Pokemon Snap will be using.

Nothing particularly new was shown in the trailer. The only new footage seen is a brief clip of Dodrio sleeping under a tree surrounded by Bouffalant. Both Dodrio and Bouffalant have been shown before, but the Bouffalant were previously seen in the same location without Dodrio, perhaps suggesting the player must do something to summon Dodrio, that the Pokemon players encounter change every time they go through a level, or the scene shown in a previous trailer was simply unfinished.

The first Pokemon Snap was released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64 during the first generation of Pokemon. There were only 151 possible Pokemon to insert into the game then. However, Pokemon is now on its eighth generation with more than 900 different choices on which monsters to put in the New Pokemon Snap, given all the Pokemon added since generation 1 and the varying forms of some of them.

For fans who have been waiting since 1999 for a sequel to Pokemon Snap, this trailer was likely unnecessary to get them excited for the game. For younger players, however, and those who have never played the N64 original but have since gotten into Pokemon, this seems to be a well-targeted ad.

New Pokemon Snap will be available for the Nintendo Switch on April 30, 2021.
