Playdead Job Listing Suggests Next Game is Much Bigger in Scope

Making a name for itself with the release of Limbo back in 2010 before following it up with the equally acclaimed Inside in 2016, Playdead has quickly become one of the most influential developers on the indie scene. It’s no secret that the studio has been working on something new in the years since its last release, with the team even dropping a few images hinting towards a general tone and setting.

First pointed out by MauroNL on Twitter, some new details about this mysterious new project can be found through a recent job listing for a technical director at the company. At the bottom of the listing, Playdead claims that it’s looking for workers to join its current project, citing the experience as a “3rd person, open world, science fiction adventure built for multiple platforms on Unreal Engine.”

As those familiar with Playdead will attest, that is a considerable departure for the developer, with the team’s previous two games focusing on shorter, linear, 2D games. Limbo and Inside could be roughly beaten in around 3-4 hours, with the games’ trading in longer runtimes for measured, concise, and atmospheric puzzle and narrative-focused experiences. Switching to an open-world, third-person format represents a much bigger shift in scope and one that will no doubt make for a very different experience from its predecessors.

The science-fiction focus is much less of a new frontier for the accomplished studio, with Inside tackling the genre with great success back in 2016. The game followed a young boy breaking into a mysterious and heavily guarded research facility, with the player having no knowledge of who he is or why he’s venturing there. His adventure takes him through the inner workings of the unnerving lab, seeing him escape the clutches of armed guards, solve puzzles using mind control, and even come face to face with a sinister lab experiment. The game was capped off by a stunning conclusion that quickly became one of the generation’s more notable gaming moments.

This new title will be published by the Epic Games Store, moving away from the limited-time Xbox exclusivity the company has focused on in the past. The artwork currently available for the game seems to imply that it’ll be an isolating and visually striking experience, featuring dark and barren science fiction worlds that appear to be stricken of human life. Knowing Playdead, it will be a compelling and silently haunting narrative-focused title, with the studio’s prior releases indicating that it’s definitely one to keep an eye on as development progresses.
