Resident Evil 8 is the latest entry in the long-running survival horror series from Capcom. The Japanese developer/publisher held a livestreamed presentation today for Resident Evil 8 to unveil the first gameplay footage and more details on what fans can expect from the frightening sequel to Resident Evil 7.
During the showcase, it was revealed that anyone who purchases Resident Evil 8 when it launches in May will have access to a brand-new, standalone multiplayer mode that’s free to play. It’ll bring together iconic characters from the series, such as Jill Valentine, Claire Redfield, Ada Wong, and even Jack Baker from Resident Evil 7.
The title is called Resident Evil Re:Verse and comes as part of Capcom’s 25th-anniversary celebration. Players can choose their own character from the series and take part in deathmatch battles with four to six players. Each match will be five minutes long and the player with the most points will come out victorious.
As fans can see in the trailer for Resident Evil Re:Verse down below, the matches will take place in various locations from throughout the mainline Resident Evil games, such as the Racoon City Police Department from Resident Evil 2. And to put a little spin on things, players can turn the tide of battle and turn into bioweapons to take revenge on the players that knocked them out. The more Virus Capsules players pick up, the stronger they can become.
During the presentation, it was also announced that a new demo is now available on the PlayStation 5 digital store. It gives players a peek of the castle area from Resident Evil 8, but the demo does not actually take place during the events of the main game. Instead, players will be put into the shoes of the Maiden, and the character isn’t able to attack or defend themselves, meaning that players will need to use their brains to escape and not guns.
This demo will allow Resident Evil fans a taste of what this title will look like on their shiny new PS5 consoles. This being the first “next-gen” Resident Evil title, it’s surely exciting to see how the series has progressed in terms of its graphical fidelity and attention to detail.
Resident Evil 8 and Resident Evil Re:Verse will both launch worldwide on May 7, 2021, for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. For those that download Re:Verse, the title will be available via backwards compatibility on PS5 and Series X/S.
