She-Hulk Adds Space Force Star Ginger Gonzaga Opposite Tatiana Maslany

Marvel Studios’ line-up of Disney Plus projects includes a series centered on the lawyer and superhero She-Hulk. Orphan Black star Tatiana Maslany will portray the title heroine of the show and now she will be joined by newly added cast member Ginger Gonzaga of Netflix’s Space Force.

Prior to appearing in Netflix’s Space Force, in which she portrayed a character parodying Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Gonzaga’s previous roles included a recurring part on Showtime’s Kidding opposite Jim Carrey. During the 2020 pilot season, Gonzaga landed a series regular role on a Fox drama pilot titled The Cleaning Lady, which was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Gonzaga became available for Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk after she opted against extending her option with The Cleaning Lady when it expired.

Deadline reports Gonzaga will board Marvel Studios’ She-Hulk as the best friend of Jennifer Walters, the alter-ego of the superpowered green heroine. Gonzaga joins supporting cast members Mark Ruffalo and Tim Roth, who reprise their respective roles as Bruce Banner and the Abomination. While Marvel Studios declined to comment on the original story, Gonzaga confirmed her casting in a post on her official Twitter account in which she expressed excitement about joining the Marvel and Disney Plus family. “I’m beyond excited to join She-Hulk! We will be directed by Kat Cairo! [Jessica Gao] is gifting us her hilarious writing & I get to run amok w/ the insanely talented Tatiana Maslaney,” she wrote.

Marvel Studios’ president Kevin Feige described She-Hulk as a half-hour legal comedy that follows Maslaney’s Jennifer Walters while she tries to be taken seriously as a working professional despite her transformation into a tall and green superhero. Feige also suggested additional Marvel characters could appear in She-Hulk from episode to episode on account of the titular heroine specializing in legal cases concerning superheroes. Co-created by Stan Lee partly to ensure Marvel would own the rights to a female version of the Hulk before CBS’ The Incredible Hulk, Walters’ transformation into a large, green, superpowered version of herself is traditionally the result of a blood transfusion from her cousin, Bruce Banner, in the comics.

As a New York-based lawyer in the comics, She-Hulk’s specialization in superhero oriented legal cases has led to speculation that characters from Netflix’s canceled Marvel shows could appear in the Disney Plus series. The chances of seeing fellow attorney Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil, appear on She-Hulk seemingly improved following reports of Charlie Cox reprising the role in Tom Holland’s third Spider-Man film.

Aside from vague references to the characters and events in the films, Netflix’s Marvel shows barely had any connection to the wider MCU. However, Feige has noted that he is not opposed to integrating Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and other heroes into the cinematic universe now that Netflix has canceled all of its Marvel projects.

She-Hulk is expected to premiere exclusively on Disney Plus in 2022.
