The saga of next-gen console restocks continues as rumors that Target will have more Xbox Series X stock soon have recently surfaced. According to an image supposedly taken from next week’s Target ad flyer, the store will have Xbox Series X consoles available for online purchase only beginning sometime during the week of January 24.
The leaked image comes courtesy of Slickdeals, a forum website where users post about deals and coupons. The original poster shared images from a supposedly leaked Target flyer set for distribution next week. The images featured an advertisement for the Xbox Series X, which says the console will be back in stock, though the exact time of release was not included in the picture.
For those who missed out on today’s GameStop next-gen console restock, this might be a great chance for Microsoft fans to get their hands on its latest hardware. While the flyer looks legit, this restock has not been confirmed by the retail chain as of yet, so those who are interested should hold out for more information.
The launch for the next console generation has been off to a rocky start thanks to scalping groups securing large amounts of PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles through the use of bots. Long-gone are the days of waiting in line at a gaming retail chain to purchase the latest gaming tech, as the emergence of online retailers has resulted in a wave of bot usage and scalping, which is robbing consumers of thousands of units.
The scalping epidemic has not gone unnoticed, leading members of the UK government to demand legal action against scalpers. Representatives like Scottish National Party MP Douglas Chapman have been very vocal in their desire to ban the scalping of gaming and computer equipment entirely. The use of bots has infringed on the average person’s right to fair access to the market, and a secondary market continues to make an absurd amount of profit.
Though Sony and Microsoft are selling tons of consoles, developers are suffering the consequences of the lack of available hardware for the average consumer. Software sales are slacking due to a large portion of “sold” consoles being held by scalpers for re-sale, rather than consumers who would be purchasing games. Sony is currently selling just one game for every three PS5 units sold, according to a report by Bloomberg in December, while the Nintendo Switch sold 525,000 units alongside 509,000 games in its first four weeks.
Government officials need to increase online policing of scalping practices as the secondary market for tech hardware continues to push the boundaries of business ethics. In due time, post-launch console restocks for devices like the PS5 and Xbox Series X will hopefully become less and less newsworthy.
