Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint Free to Play on PC For Limited Time

Hitting shelves back in 2019, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint flew under the radar upon release, earning middling reviews and generally not managing to gain too much traction. Many cited that the game was a bit of a mess technically, with plenty of bugs and glitches, while its story was underwhelming despite bringing aboard the talents of Walking Dead and Punisher star Jon Bernthal.

It has since received a lot of work from Ubisoft through various updates, and luckily for those who never got to try out the multiplayer shooter, it’s currently free to play on PC until January 24. Those who want to jump in and get their hands on the game can do so by heading over to either the Epic Games Store or Ubisoft Connect.

Any and all progress made in the title will carry over to the full game if players decide to grab themselves a copy following the limited free trial this weekend, meaning those who do end up enjoying the latest iteration of the Ghost Recon series can continue playing after the event is over. In conjunction with that, the game’s Standard, Gold, and Ultimate editions are on sale on Ubisoft Connect, although it seems players on The Epic Games Store will have to fork out full price.

For those who didn’t play Breakpoint when it released, the online tactical shooter takes place on a fictional chain of islands in the Pacific Ocean known as Auroa. Players assume the role of special forces colonel Anthony Perryman, who must venture to the islands to investigate a series of strange disturbances involving a futuristic arms manufacturer known as Skell Technology. Before long, things go south, as Perryman locks horns with former Ghost Recon colonel Cole Walker – played by Bernthal – and his army of ex-military soldiers. Although the set up was definitely intriguing, it was unanimously labeled as disappointing, with some even claiming you could kill Bernthal’s intimidating main villain in the very first mission.

Still, the game has been worked on over the last year, so it’ll be interesting to see whether this new free weekend brings in an onslaught of new players. Although it’s difficult to create a resurgence for a game like Breakpoint, it’s not impossible, with Sea of Thieves recently managing to welcome an influx of players on Steam and launching straight to the top of the best-sellers chart. Rust also cultivated the same success, dethroning Cyberpunk 2077’s two-month-long run as the best-selling game on Steam.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint is out now on PC, PlayStation 4, Google Stadia, and Xbox One.
