90’s video offers a rare look at Nintendo’s US headquarters

Want to see the NES being made?

New footage has emerged which shows what life was like at Nintendo of America back in 1990.

The video was uploaded by YouTube user btm0815ma – as spotted by Panic Inc’s Cabel Sasser – features raw and unedited footage of a US news report from Nintendo’s Redmond, Washington headquarters from June 1990. Not only do we see the various stages of building and shipping the company’s NES console, but the journalists also speak to staff in Nintendo’s product design team.

That’s on top of footage from what looks like staff play-testing or bug-testing various games, including RC Pro-Am and Tetris.

The footage is unedited, with a journalist speaking to the camera doing various takes of his story, and much of the video seems to be primarily intended for B-roll. When Sasser first pointed out the video on January 20, it had only 85 views, but boasts 15,487 views at the time of writing. Seems people are interested in what life was like at Nintendo’s US headquarters over 30 years ago!

The channel seems to be primarily old news footage from the early 1990s, including reports about the first Gulf War, but there’s a bunch of interesting tech and games videos in there, too. As well as the Nintendo of America HQ footage, there’s an ABC report from Nintendo’s booth at the 1991 Consumer Electronics Show, with an exec seemingly called Peter May talking about the Game Boy, as well as reports about the PlayStation 2’s launch and previews for the original Xbox and GameCube.
