Becoming a firm point of concern for the community due to the game’s upcoming UI changes, Dead by Daylight players have been requesting accessibility options for colorblindness for a while now, with many claiming the game can be challenging to navigate for those with the condition. This is due to scratch marks and auras, two essential parts of the multiplayer horror game, being difficult to see for colorblind players alongside several other aspects of the UI.
As of yesterday, Dead by Daylight developer Behavior Interactive announced that the team is finally developing a colorblind mode. It seems the accessibility mode will look to offer three different settings, with options for players with deuteranopia, tritanopia, and protanopia colorblindness.
The feature will not be added in the game’s upcoming 4.5.0 patch, with Behavior Interactive claiming that it’s hoping to slot it into the next major update. The new announcement comes after a recent controversy surrounding one of the game’s developers. Following the release of 4.5.0 on the game’s test realms – which effectively act as a beta for each subsequent update before they go live to the entire Dead by Daylight playerbase – players began to note their concerns surrounding the title’s newly implemented UI changes and the effects it could have on colorblind players.
One fan asked one of Dead by Daylight‘s developers a question about these UI issues while he was streaming the game, to which he responded “it’s getting really boring just blabbing about colorblind mode all the time, we’ve heard it a million times.” He continued, “If it gets done, it’ll get done… when we have time to do it, or if somebody decides that it’s something that should be done.” The comments were immediately met with backlash by the community, with Able Gamers’ Steve Spohn addressing Behavior Interactive directly and bringing the clip to its attention.
The studio quickly responded with an apology, claiming that the developer’s comments were “not indicative of the views of the team.” The colorblind mode was announced thereafter, with Behavior Interactive promising those angered by the studio’s inactivity towards the accessibility feature would see significant changes in the coming months. As for Dead by Daylight itself, the game recently announced that it would be getting a graphical update, while it debuted a new killer last month called The Twins. The new playable character allows users to take control of two killers at once, with players able to control both Victor and Charlotte to dominate teams of survivors.
Dead by Daylight is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
