When players first jump into the Star Wars tabletop roleplaying game Force and Destiny, it’s likely that they’ll create a would-be Jedi on a quest to gain mastery over the force. While this type of adventure is always fun and a fitting start, it’s only a matter of time before players start to lust for something darker. Even in standard Dungeons and Dragons, many groups have crossed that threshold and attempted to run “evil campaigns,” but the Star Wars universe is ripe with opportunity for that kind of thing. Despite all this, starting a Sith adventure can be difficult, as there isn’t a ton of information on how to do this in the core book.
Star Wars Force and Destiny generally assumes that players are making good-aligned characters and will be fighting against the Sith and other dark forces. Evidence of this can be found right in the enemies section of the book, where Fallen Apprentice and Fallen Master represent the dark side of the force but no such thing exists for light side users. The first step to creating a good Sith Themed adventure is picking the right setting, and for that players may want to dig deeper into the Legends lore of Star Wars.
The Demon Moon Dxun has shown up several times in Legends material for Star Wars, but it has yet to make a canonical appearance. Because of this, not many are familiar with it or the dangers that lurk on this dark moon. As a brief history, an ancient Sith Lord named Freedon Nadd was entombed upon this planet, but his spirit was so powerful that Dark Side energy enveloped and corrupted the moon. As a fierce jungle, the creatures of this moon were already deadly, but they are even more so now that they are imbued with the power of the Dark Side.
This makes a great location for Sith characters to explore because it is a well known Dark Side site, places with high concentrations of Dark Side energy that are often home to powerful Sith artifacts and other forbidden knowledge. Of note, there are two major attractions here that players will likely want to visit if they know about them, the Tomb of Freedon Nadd and the Well of Darkness. These areas should be real threats to the players, so the game master should make it clear ahead of time that no character is safe from death.
Traditionally, Dxun’s Well of Darkness is a seemingly bottomless pit found inside a cave on the moon. A massive colony of Orablisks, trilobite like creatures whose shells are completely resistant to lightsabers and that feed off dark side energy, call this cave their home. Players attempting to enter the Well of Darkness may need to deal with these threats if they use the Dark Side to power their force abilities, as this will prompt the Orbalisks to latch on like a parasite. This is also the origin of the infamous Darth Bane’s armor, which was impervious to lightsabers.
Once inside the well, players will be met with three separate illusions, each more terrifying than the last. The first illusion is meant to test whether the players are worthy of the dark side. They see a terrible evil befalling someone or something they care about and must have the willpower to resist falling into madness. The second illusion focuses on the character’s greatest desire, but they are unable to achieve it without striking down a loved one. Finally, the third illusion sends the character into an unbridled rage, and they must find a way to control their anger to complete the challenge. Each of these should be accompanied by an enticing reward.
In the extended lore of the Star Wars universe, very few Sith were ever able to enter the Tomb of Freedon Nadd and make it out alive. The focal point of the Darkness corrupting the entire moon, this area emanates immense Dark Side energy and is full of deadly traps and creatures. The Dxun Tomb Beasts lurks here, also known as Devourers, fearsome creatures capable of infecting prey with Dark Side poison and even turning themselves invisible while hunting.
Once inside the tomb, further horrors await the players. These are mostly left up to the game master’s imagination, but it should be an extremely difficult task to break into and survive the Tomb of Freedon Nadd since only a select few powerful Sith have done so before. As a reward for those that do, Sith Artifacts lie in abundance inside, granting players power beyond what they could normally achieve through simply leveling up. Good examples of this include Sith Holocrons and enchanted weapons or items that are imbued with the power of the Dark Side.
For those wanting to explore the option of a Dark Side adventure but not wanting to devote themselves to an entire campaign, the Demon Moon Dxun can be a great setting for a one-shot adventure. Have players create relatively powerful dark side force users and explain that they are each potential candidates to be the apprentice for the current Sith Lord. In keeping with the Rule of Two, the Sith Lord sends the players to the Demon Moon Dxun, telling them they must survive there until only one of them remains.
Knowing that only one player character will make it out alive sews seeds of distrust among the players, but at the same time they will need each other in order to survive. This is a great way for players to get into character as conniving, back stabbing Sith and try and gain as much power as they can while also keeping an eye on their companions. The game master should not pull any punches here and be sure to make the wildlife just as dangerous as the other players if not more so. In the end, the adventure ends when only one player is left alive.
