Uncharted Movie Delayed Until 2022 | Game Rant

Despite everyone’s hope of things going back to normal with the rollout of the Coronavirus vaccines, it seems there are still new delays and roadblocks every day. Yet another film to move to the safer looking 2022 window is the Uncharted film, which was meant to be one of Sony’s major film releases, but is instead yet another sign that things won’t be normal again for some time.

The Uncharted film is, of course, based on the popular video game series of the same name. As a PlayStation exclusive franchise, the games feature Nolan North as Nathan Drake, an adventurer who gets into all kinds of Indiana Jones-style trouble on a consistent basis. With 4 mainline titles and several spin-offs, the series was immensely popular for its cinematic qualities and fun, lighthearted adventure stories, making it a good candidate for a film adaptation.

While there hasn’t been much marketing for the project yet, it is known that the movie will star Tom Holland as a younger Nathan Drake, presumably in a sort of origin story for the character. Plot points beyond that are unknown, but presumably Drake will be searching for some kind of ancient treasure while being pursued by another party that wants it for their own nefarious reasons, as is typical of the franchise.

This delay seems to come as part of a wave of delays across the industry. No Time to Die was the first to announce yet another shift in release windows, and several other films have followed suit. While medical experts have predicted that things will start to return to normal around Fall, assuming everything goes smoothly, that still means Summer is out of the question for big-budget releases, as there’s no guarantee anyone will be willing or able to see a film in theaters at that point.

While some smaller films may opt to embrace streaming releases instead, the big films that invest heavily in theater releases will no doubt continue to be pushed back towards the end of the year or shift completely to 2022. As disappointing as the news may be, it’s likely the right call, both for Sony’s bottom line and the overall health of those who will see the film in theaters.

Whenever the film does actually arrive, hopefully it will capture the spirit of the original games, and prove itself to have been worth the wait. When everything returns to some semblance of normalcy, it will at least be nice to have a suite of blockbuster films to finally go see in person again.

Uncharted will release in February of 2022.
