Though, there are only so many kinds of builds one can enjoy before they wish to take a break from their adventures in Boletaria. With quite a few awesome action RPGs out there to enjoy, players won’t have to look very far to uncover games that hold similarly refined combat, epic enemies, and spectacular settings that they have come to love in Demon’s Souls.

10 Nioh 2

For eerie atmospheres and a landscape crawling with inhuman monsters, Nioh 2 is one of the best scratches for the Demon’s Souls itch that may be afflicting gamers. Each area is an isolated pocket of the world, much like how the level design of Demon’s Souls is set up. This allows players to pop in and out of these levels with a satisfying feeling of compartmentalization.

Furthermore, this kind of gameplay structure grants gamers the chance to learn the layout of specific locations that will come in handy for future missions in these same areas. The combat is very versatile and offers a lot of replay value, which is even more satisfying when combined with the unique, interesting, and challenging enemies and bosses that one will encounter as they trek through demon-infested lands.

9 Dark Souls

As the spiritual successor to Demon’s Souls, this is very much the closest-linked game for both mechanics, gameplay, and atmosphere. Sure, Dark Souls 3 is a lot easier to get into and Dark Souls 2 have more bosses and area variability, but the very first Dark Souls was FromSoftware taking everything they learned from their time rescuing Demon’s Souls from development hell and putting it into a project where they had a decent budget and resources.

In addition to having many elements carried over, Dark Souls has very similar pacing in terms of enemy aggression and boss difficulty. The settings are laid out differently, due to Dark Souls being more of an open-world, though the areas where one can enter a location often feel very similar to those found in Demon’s Souls because of FromSoftware’s excellent game design skills.

8 Bloodborne

As the only game in the Souls-like category without the crucial word in their title, Bloodborne stands apart from the other FromSoftware games that people often compare it to. The models, textures, and many other factors are very similar to what will find in Demon’s Souls and the Dark Souls trilogy, though offers faster, more evasion-oriented gameplay.

There are a plethora of fiends to slay, either by blade or bullet, which makes hunting beasts in and around decrepit, filthy Yarnham exhilarating. The deep lore is something that many gamers will very much appreciate as it draws them into an immersive world full of Lovecraftian horror, supernatural gothic elements, and massive replayability.

7 Ghost Of Tsushima

For refined and exciting combat, Ghost of Tsushima offers players the chance to cross swords with countless Mongols, ronin, and rival samurai. The melee system is expertly balanced and gives gamers many styles, perks, and special attacks in which to cut down their foes.

There is also a choice between what kinds of builds one can use that entirely depends on one’s preferences. Sneaky ninjas, majestic snipers, or bold bushido warriors can all be successful in this beautifully-designed game. The visuals and audio are also fantastic, allowing one to feel like they really are on the lovely islands of Tsushima.

6 Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

Unexpectedly, one of the most recent games in the Star Wars universe was released as an action RPG. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order puts players in the boots of a young Jedi named Cal who begins his adventure of trying to rebuild the Jedi order after being outed as one of the force-wielding beings during his stay in a ship-scraping facility.

Now on the run from the Empire, Cal must explore different worlds to learn more about how to restore his order while dodging and battling legions of stormtroopers, native beasts, and other threats. The combat is oriented around parrying, dodging, and timing one’s strikes strategically. This makes it very satisfying for people who enjoy such combat in Demon’s Souls.

5 Hades

Despite currently only being available on PCHades has gamers all over the world drooling from its extremely satisfying gameplay, wonderful art style, and very suitable music. Players take the role of Zagreus, Hades’ son, as he escapes the underworld and the oppression of his father.

Played from an isometric view, it differs from other action RPGs due to its perspective, but this is a boon rather than a burden. It allows players to see more of the environment at once, making for more hectic, fast-paced gameplay that still focuses on strategic combat steeped in a world of deep lore based on Greek mythology.

4 Nier: Automata

Those who love action RPGs, but need some sci-fi, should definitely check out Nier: Automata when they have a chance. The refined battle system makes for an action-packed adventure full of swords, guns, and laser beams. Accompanying one on their adventures as the android 2B is a phenomenal original soundtrack that can even be listened to on its own and still be enjoyed immensely.

There is also a lot of customization one can take advantage of in order to put together their ideal build. Many melee and ranged weapons are available for players to hack, slash, and blast enemies with in any manner they desire. All of this, plus consequences for death, make this a great game for lovers of Demon’s Souls. There are even a few great mods that can enhance one’s gameplay experience.

3 Titan Quest

Even though it is well over a decade old, Titan Quest is still considered by action RPG fans to be a title worth remembering and replaying. Players take control of an avatar that they can customize and must travel the ancient world to stop enemies releasing the mighty titans from Greek mythology from their otherworldly prison.

Played from a third-person perspective, gamers must traverse much of Greece, Egypt, and many more lore-rich locations in their quest to stop the enemies of Olympus from escaping. The combat is very melee-oriented and will require the player to defeat both familiar adversaries like skeletons as well as many mythical beasts from Greek mythology.

2 Transistor

Much like other games released by the talented development studio Supergiant GamesTransistor offers similar aspects that many have come to enjoy from their other games, such as Bastion and Pyre. The art style is appropriate for the setting and very easy on the eyes, much like the music is the equivalent for one’s ears, and the smooth controls are for a gamer’s hands.

The melee-geared combat, stemming from the primary usage of a greatsword, grants Demon’s Souls fans a valid reason to pick this game up. Though, when they really get into Transistor, they’ll find the combat system so tight and efficient that they will likely become addicted to trying out all the different builds that can be put together.

1 Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night

Although this older Castlevania game from 1997 lacks an entire dimension in which to view the world in, there is little that causes this to detract from the stellar gameplay and atmosphere. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night places the player in the role of Alucard, the antagonistic Dracula’s half-human son.

As a departure from previous games in the franchise, there are leveling-up, save points, and other role-playing game elements to explore and exploit. There are even stats and builds that can be put together for great efficiency in slaying monsters of the night. Available on the PlayStation online store, there is no reason not to check out this classic title that undoubtedly has inspired countless dark fantasy games in the action RPG genre that came after it.
