Halo Infinite Reportedly Has Multiple Betas Planned for 2021

Microsoft will reportedly keep its word on letting gamers beta test Halo Infinite before its release. Not only will a beta test be available, but developer 343 Industries is “actively drafting plans” for multiple Halo Infinite betas throughout 2021.

The sixth main entry in Xbox’s flagship franchise was infamously delayed last year, originally set to be the launch title for Microsoft’s newest console, the Xbox Series X. Fans’ lukewarm reception to Halo Infinite‘s gameplay trailer and the ongoing coronavirus pandemic contributed to the delay until fall 2021, which 343 Industries says will be worth the wait.

According to a report by Windows Central, the intent behind the beta tests, or “flights” as Microsoft calls them, is to begin small-scale and expand in size over time. Similar to the method used to develop the updates for Halo: The Master Chief Collection, the feedback from the betas will play an instrumental role in making key decisions about Halo Infinite as 343 gears up to publicly launch later this year.

343 is planning to select beta testers via its Halo Insider program, so interested players will want to make sure they’re properly registered. It’s currently unclear what the beta will entail, whether it be bits of the campaign, certain multiplayer modes, or perhaps something entirely unique.

The news would seem to indicate a change of plans from 343 Industries. In July 2020, the developer stated that its public beta plans had changed, and the studio would no longer be able to promise any public beta tests for the title. The change comes as welcome news for Halo fans looking to get their hands on the highly anticipated game a bit early. While the team behind Halo Infinite has remained largely silent as of late, they did release several screenshots of its multiplayer, showcasing its updated, more polished lighting and textures like in the image above.

Despite the approximately year-long delay of the next entry in Halo‘s story, the franchise’s popularity remains high. Halo: The Master Chief Collection has been lauded as an incredible game by many, a complete turnaround from its 2014 launch. Master Chief has also found himself in Fortnite, along with a Halo creative map, and there is currently a strong push to add the Spartan as a fighter in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

While the initial delay of Halo Infinite disappointed many in the gaming community, others are glad 343 is taking the time to make sure the game is properly finished, and avoid a Cyberpunk 2077-type situation. The beta tests should come as exciting news for Halo fans everywhere, who now have a direct hand in shaping the upcoming title’s direction. Until then, players can always fire up The Master Chief Collection for some Grifball. This year is shaping up to be a big one for Xbox and Halo, which celebrate their 20th anniversaries in 2021.
