Kassandra is Alive in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, But Where is She?

Much like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla gives players a choice between two genders. There’s one notable exception, though: both Assassin’s Creed Odyssey‘s Alexios or Kassandra exist in the historical context. Kassandra is the canon Eagle Bearer, while Alexios is the canon Deimos. As such, Kassandra is the one who passes the Staff of Hermes to Layla, living to be 2400+ years old to do so. SPOILERS AHEAD.

With Assassin’s Creed Valhalla taking place near the end of the ninth century and Kassandra being born 400+ years BC, the latter would have been roughly the ripe old age of 1300. She would have been alive and kicking, though, so it’s easy to wonder how she filled 2400 years of life and, during this exact time period, where she was.

As Kassandra notes regarding Ikaros when meeting Layla Hassan in AC Odyssey, everyone Kassandra knew or loved had died long before her. This includes her brother Alexios, her mother, her adopted father, her beloved eagle Ikaros, and many more. Yet, Kassandra lived on in good health and with a mission thanks to the Staff of Hermes. This particular Piece of Eden is powerful in many ways, having played a major role in the recent storyline. It gets Kassandra to Layla, it gets Layla to the Reader/Desmond, and it gets Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Basim to the modern day.

While the results of the latter two remain to be seen, the ultimate end of Kassandra is clearly spelled out, but it’s often the journey, not the destination, that matters. As a result, the world around Kassandra changed and she with it, meaning she experienced a HUGE chunk of human history. This isn’t really explored, but it does open the opportunity for her to appear in other Assassin’s Creed games. Sadly, it doesn’t seem Kassandra exists in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (but there is a bust of her in AC Origins).

During this time period, it’s clear that Kassandra is waiting for the Heir, but it’s also clear that she didn’t just sit with Aletheia in Atlantis for millennia. When she appears to Layla, she is wearing a dress suit which could indicate her activities to this point. Now, that doesn’t mean Kassandra was some businesswoman, but it does mean that she saw the world. It would have been interesting to see Kassandra appear somewhere in AC Valhalla, even if that were as some background character. This may have been avoided due to the aforementioned choice of Kassandra/Alexios, but importing that info could have circumvented this. Just going with the canon choice could have as well.

There’s no indication that Kassandra was ever involved with the Hidden Ones, but she could have been. She could have been present in England at this time, she could have still been in Greece, or she could have really been anywhere. At 1300 years old, it’s hard to imagine that she did remain in Greece though. There’s the possibility that she was somewhere, as transfiguring form is one of the staff’s abilities, but it’s all in the air now. It’s possible this is explored more with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla‘s upcoming DLC.

After all, it seems likely that Kassandra is aware of the multitude of Assassin/Templar-like factions that cropped up over the years, and it seems the Wrath of the Druids DLC will bringing another: the Chidlren of Danu. Fans probably shouldn’t be much stock in it actually happening. Still, it would be interesting to see Kassandra return to fight alongside Eivor or the protagonist of the next Assassin’s Creed game, and the possibility of that hasn’t gone anywhere.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla is available now for PC, PS5, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
