Another tease has been shared online that further alludes to the return of classic gaming TV show X-Play for the soon to be rebooted G4 network. For those who didn’t grow up watching cable television in the 2000s, G4 was a network that ran from 2002 to 2013 and was advertised as “TV 4 gamers.”
X-Play, alongside Attack of the Show, were the two tentpoles of the network, providing gaming reviews and news almost always through a comical lens. The channel struggled to compete with the rise of YouTube and internet gaming content, however, and X-Play and Attack of the Show were canceled in 2012. The network was then rebranded as the Esquire Network before being completely shuttered shortly thereafter.
G4 is confirmed to be returning in 2021, but the network has been purposefully cagey about whether it will bring back X-Play or Attack of the Show. But the other day, the official Twitter account for G4 decided to get in on the Bernie Sanders inauguration meme that is currently sweeping the internet with a tweet that not-so-cryptically teases a return for X-Play. The tweet reads “see you soon @xplay #BernieSanders.” The image of original X-Play hosts Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb has been photoshopped so that the mitten-ed Bernie Sanders is taking Webb’s place.
The verified @xplay account replied “what?” perhaps leaning into the joke from the Thanksgiving 2020 G4 Reunion Special that G4 is bringing back its old shows and maybe even its old hosts against their will. The reunion brought back Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb from X-Play, Olivia Munn and Kevin Pereria from Attack of the Show, Kristin Adams from Cheat! and G4 correspondent Blair Herter. The special also introduced Austin Creed, AKA WWE superstar Xavier Woods, who is confirmed to be a host of G4 when it relaunches this year.
G4 does not have a set return date yet for 2021, nor has it made clear how it intends to survive in a market that is even more crowded than it was during its past failure, thanks to the advent of Twitch. But there is a great deal of interest in X-Play and G4’s return. Many gaming fans cite the one-of-a-kind network as highly influential, inspiring many to start YouTube channels, podcasts, and more. But nearly 10 years will have passed since X-Play’s cancellation by the time G4 returns, so if nothing else, it will be interesting to see how G4’s reboot will fair in 2021 and beyond.
