If there’s one thing gamers like to hold onto, it’s hope. A piece of leaked information here or a rumor there can keep people guessing for a good while. With that, there may be some good news on the horizon for those fans of The Sinking City, the creepy Lovecraftian detective game by Frogwares. While there isn’t a lot of detail to go off at the moment, a recent source has leaked a screenshot which shows the indie game may be coming to the PS5 at some point.
While nothing has been officially announced by its developer, the Japanese gaming site Gematsu posted an image on Twitter yesterday which lists The Sinking City and its creator above the words “PS5.” This could easily be interpreted to imply that the game will be coming out on next-gen consoles. It’s difficult to reach a solid conclusion at this stage, but fans will no doubt be keeping an ear out for any official announcements being made by the developers or anyone on the inside.
The Sinking City is a Lovecraft-inspired game which was released in 2019 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4 and Xbox One. It takes place in the 1920s in an unknown Massachusetts town and tells the story of its inhabitants and a mysterious cult. Since being launched, it has gathered modest reviews, though some players criticized the games technical issues and rather lackluster gameplay elements. Being no stranger to detective fiction, Frogwares is known for its series of Sherlock Holmes games, with a new game – Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One – due for release this year.
The Sinking City also came under fire in the middle of last year when it was pulled from digital storefronts following an ongoing legal battle with the game’s publisher. Frogwares say the company failed to make payments, often doing so “hundreds of days” after the agreed upon date. Later on when publisher Nacon purchased a similar Lovecraftian game, it demanded Frogwares hand over the source code for their IP for which the developers refused. The game was subsequently removed from Steam and other digital platforms. It was still available on platforms such as Origin and console storefronts.
The good news, however, is The Sinking City has been returned to digital stores. The legal battle between developer and publisher is ongoing, but fans will be able to play the game once again, despite the case still pending in French courts.
The Sinking City is out now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
