Rumor: Resident Evil 7 Next-Gen Upgrade in the Works | Game Rant

Capcom took a big risk with Resident Evil 7 by shifting the franchise’s traditional third-person viewpoint to a first-person perspective. However, it’s safe to say the gamble has paid off big time, as Resident Evil 7 is one of Capcom’s best-selling games ever and earned rave reviews at the time of its release. Capcom will be continuing Resident Evil 7‘s legacy with the launch of Resident Evil 8 later this year, but in the meantime, fans may soon get a reason to revisit RE7 itself.

According to AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golemon Twitter, Capcom “100%” has a next-gen patch in the works for Resident Evil 7. Presumably, this next-gen patch will be for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, though that wasn’t specified. It’s also unclear what exactly this patch will entail or if this means that a proper next-gen release of Resident Evil 7 is in the works. Maybe it will simply be a patch that improves the game’s performance on next-gen consoles, or maybe it will be a full-blown upgrade like some other games have enjoyed.

Whatever the case may be, if the Resident Evil 7 next-gen patch is in the works, one has to imagine that it will drop before Resident Evil 8 does. And if that’s the case, then Capcom should be sharing information about it sooner rather than later. After all, the Resident Evil 8 release date is May 7, and the company is also expecting to drop a second demo between now and then, and so it’s going to have its hands full.

AestheticGamer also touched on the possibility of Resident Evil 8 supporting virtual reality. As some may recall, Resident Evil 7 had a VR mode, and it was quite well-received at the time. With Resident Evil 8 sticking with Resident Evil 7‘s first-person viewpoint and seemingly playing relatively the same, it makes sense that fans are wondering about a VR mode. AestheticGamer says that VR was planned for Resident Evil 8 “at some point,” but it may not be part of the final product. As it stands, Capcom has not made any official announcements about Resident Evil 8 having any kind of VR mode.

There are still many unanswered questions about Resident Evil 8, though the recent Resident Evil showcase did give fans some answers. It not only confirmed Resident Evil 8‘s release date, but it also revealed that PS4 and Xbox One versions are on the way as well. And since Sony still hasn’t announced a PlayStation VR 2 headset, one would need the PS4 version of RE8 if they were to play the game in VR.

PS5 owners can play the Resident Evil 8 demo while they wait for news on a potential VR version of the upcoming survival-horror game. Those on other platforms should have a demo of their own to play in the near future as well.

Resident Evil 7 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
