Twitch is arguably the world’s leading online streaming service, with 3 million monthly streamers and around 15 million active users. This is in spite of going up against the likes of YouTube and other competitors. However, despite the increase in popularity over the years, controversy often follows in the company’s wake, often over its decision to ban users, and now it appears another streamer has been permanently banned but for different reasons.
The streamer known as AverageHarry has had his account removed by Twitch, alleging that his account was created before he’d reached the age of 13. Now 15, Harry was denied a partnership with the streaming service in January after waiting 72 days for a reply to his application. Despite the perma-ban, he has stated that he is allowed to create a new account, but the loss of his main one has cost him almost 90k followers.
The ban has caused a backlash from the community who are saying Twitch have acted hypocritically. Some in the gaming community have said that a popular channel run by a 16-year-old has not had the same treatment as AverageHarry even though the account was allegedly registered when the user was just 11. Others have said that various Fortnite streaming channels have also not had their accounts banned, including popular streamers such as Bugha who has around 3.8 million followers. This is all despite their owners being underage when they were created.
Fans of Harry have been reaching out to Twitch to shine some light on the situation which has left some users baffled. However, there may be other reasons why his channel was removed, which could be related to a clause in Twitch’s terms of services. This could account for why this streamer was banned but not others. However, their TOS clearly state that the service is not available to anyone under the age of 13. This is also not the first time it’s banned a popular streamer. A few days ago, it removed the account of user CodeMiko (not for the first time either) for reasons that have not been made clear.
Amazon purchased Twitch back in 2014 for a whopping $970 million US, which just goes to show how huge the streaming service has become. This may have surprised some people who might have assumed that Google would be the ones to make the purchase. While it did plan to just before Amazon got there, some believe it pulled out of the deal at the last minute.
