There’s no denying that Cyberpunk 2077‘s launch has been the subject of criticism. A series of game-breaking bugs have left console and PC gamers upset with developer CD Projekt Red. Such controversy even led to the game being removed from the PlayStation Store altogether. However, that hasn’t stopped the vast sci-fi action RPG from receiving high praise and a slew of awards.
Recent statistics indicate that Cyberpunk 2077 will go down in history as the biggest digital game release ever. The immense hype of the game prior to release and the reputation of its studio means it has broken records, selling around 10.2 million digital units. According to the data, those figures include copies of the game that were eventually refunded. In total, around 80% of digital sales for the game were for the PC version.
All that said, this could mean just a short win for the developer, as, despite smashing records, misery still seems to be following in the game’s wake after the 1.10 patch failed to fix some issues that are plaguing fans. It’s likely that CD Projekt Red is going to have to invest a lot of time and resources trying to make the game as stable as possible, or perhaps risk damaging its reputation further.
Cyberpunk 2077 was in development for several years with a lot of hype surrounding it, most likely due to the huge popularity of the studio’s game The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Once Keanu Reeves was brought on board to lend his voice, likeness, and to provide motion capture for his character Johnny Silverhand, the internet’s collective ears began to prick up even more, as the hype train continued to barrel ever faster towards the release date.
The future of Cybperunk and its developer are not 100% certain at this stage. Patches are being rolled out in the hope of undoing the game’s biggest issues, but those who are upset by the rather tumultuous release may remember a few years ago, when Hello Games’ galaxy exploration game No Man’s Sky experienced similar controversy. That, too, was the end result of a launch shrouded in negativity due to the game simply not living up to expectations. So while CD Projekt Red can celebrate its record-breaking win, many will be holding onto hope that Cyberpunk 2077 will be the game that was promised to the world.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions in development.
