Gabe Newell Aims to Play Apex Legends For Future Game Inspiration

There is something heartwarming about hearing some of gaming’s biggest industry superstars talk about the games they like to play. It’s even more intriguing when these people are praising games for their ability to inspire. Yesterday, Valve’s CEO Gabe Newell spoke about his desire to get through his backlog of games in the hope of finding some inspiration for his own work.

One notable title he picked is Respawn Entertainment’s battle royale game Apex Legends. As something of a legend himself in the industry, Newell and his company are responsible for some of the biggest first-person games of the last two decades. Such titles as Half Life, PortalTeam Fortress and Left 4 Dead have left their mark on the community and have become staples in many gamers’ personal libraries. Valve is also responsible for the creation of Steam, which has become the most successful download client for PC games since its launch in 2003.

Gabe has said Apex Legends is definitely one game that he hopes to finally get to play, adding that other developers at Valve have been “grinding away” at it. However, he isn’t just wanting to play it for kicks, he also believes it will be a source for learning, something that could inspire him on his future projects. The feeling is mutual, it seems, as some of the people from Respawn Entertainment have responded to Gabe’s kind words, calling him a “bearded god” and inviting him and his company to play a few rounds of Apex with them. Only time will tell whether such a clash will take place or not.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Newell has spoken highly about some of gaming’s biggest titles and respected individuals. It was just a couple of days ago that he was speaking about Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto’s influence on him as a developer, saying how much the likes of Mario have helped him improve as a game creator over the years, as well as being heaps of fun to play.

Gabe’s desire to play Apex Legends with the Valve team is hardly surprising. The game came out in 2019 for a number of systems as a free-to-play title and was received positively by many gamers, winning several notable awards. It’s also become a popular fixture for esports competitions since its launch. Overall, it will be interesting to see how the game will have an impact on Gabe’s future outpourings.

Apex Legends is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, with a Switch version currently in development.
