Grand Theft Auto fans are hungry for news, but not just any news. An announcement regarding what’s next for Grand Theft Auto Online would certainly be well received, but that’s not what GTA fans are hungry for. They want to know about Grand Theft Auto 6, the unannounced and unconfirmed sequel believed to be in development at Rockstar. Fittingly, the upcoming Super Bowl 55 event is giving those GTA fans another opportunity to speculate about just such a reveal.
The focus on Super Bowl 55 isn’t entirely without direction, but it’s a reach to be sure. The speculation takes root in last year’s Super Bowl, the Miami-based Super Bowl 54. Those who watched Super Bowl 54 might recall that Fox produced a video for its kickoff show with a Grand Theft Auto Vice City theme. The video featured a Fox NFL Kickoff logo with the Vice City font, then showed clips with mini-map and star-rating graphics in the corners.
At the time, Grand Theft Auto fans took the Vice City theme as evidence of the involvement of Rockstar in the event. While no such partnership came to fruition, fans still assumed there was a purpose to the Vice City references. Even now, many fans believe those Super Bowl 54 references were a hint that Grand Theft Auto 6 would revisit Vice City, which has become a widespread and popular rumor.
The thought process of some fans says that if Super Bowl 54 hinted at Vice City‘s inclusion in Grand Theft Auto 6, then Super Bowl 55 must have something special in-store, too. Perhaps there will be more subtle hints from Rockstar, or perhaps they’ll go all out and release a brand new trailer. There’s no actual evidence of this, of course. But Grand Theft Auto fans enjoy speculating almost as much as they enjoy actual announcements.
To repeat, there’s no actual indication that Rockstar will share any news about the future of Grand Theft Auto at the upcoming Super Bowl or anywhere else for some time. There’s also no real evidence that the Fox Vice City references were anything other than a fun thematic way to make clear the Super Bowl was in Miami. As exciting as Grand Theft Auto 6 news may seem, there’s no reason to believe any will be delivered soon.
As with all games, an announcement will be made eventually. Speculating is fun, especially with how wild the GTA speculation community is, but it’s probably best to maintain healthy expectations about when Rockstar’s next game will arrive. That is to say, Rockstar will reveal Grand Theft Auto 6 when it’s ready.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently unannounced and unconfirmed.
