The Elder Scrolls: 10 Of The Strongest Named Dragons In Lore, Ranked By Power

The ancient history of Tamriel is filled with epic tales of bravery and heroism. Dragons, of course, are often featured extensively in those stories. Once, they had been the masters of all mankind before being violently overthrown by their former subjects. Many of the more prominent Dragons from this era that weren’t killed outright would meet very different fates over the succeeding centuries.

Some would be hunted down and exterminated by various organizations, most notably the Blades. Others went into hiding and still remain elusive well into the Fourth Era. These famous and powerful Dragons have all left their indelible mark on the pages of Tamriel’s history.

10 Nafaalilargus

Sometimes known as Nahfahlaar, this crafty Dragon had a penchant for survival. Nafaalilargus is somewhat of a unique figure in that he often sought out the assistance of mortals for his own protection. His most famous patron was Tiber Septim, whom he served as a loyal soldier during the latter’s conquest of Tamriel.

During the events of The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard the protagonist Cyrus confronts the red dragon inside his lair. Nafaalilargus gets dealt a fatal sword blow and perishes inside his treasure vault on Stros M’Kai. Whereas the majority of his brothers were slain, Nafaalilargus’ canny instinct for survival prolonged his life for centuries.

9 Grahkrindrog

There is a distinct lack of specific detail on the exploits of this fearsome-sounding Dragon. The facts that are provided speak of Grahkrindrog’s extreme deadliness throughout the Second Era. It’s said that he perpetrated great acts of violence in the north of Skyrim, particularly in the Holds of Eastmarch and Winterhold.

The book Atlas of Dragons, compiled by the legendary Dragonguard, speaks of this Dragon’s eventual demise. In 2E 184 he was cornered and slain by the Dragonguard. The College of Winterhold mages evidently assisted in the identification of the villain’s body.

8 Mulaamnir

This azure-colored Dragon was the chief lieutenant of Kaalgrontiid in the Second Era. He (along with his master) ended up entombed within the Halls of Colossus for thousands of years before being accidentally set free. Mulaamnir would once again assist his master in their plan to consume the lunar power of the moon.

Mulaamnir is a very deadly adversary and is one of the few of his kind that utilizes storm magic. He even boasts that his “claws have dealt a thousand deaths.” However, in The Elder Scrolls Online it’s the Vestige who ends Mulaamnir’s life when they do battle on the Plane of Jode.

7 Numinex

Numinex is the subject of many folk tales in the land of Skyrim. Nordic bards and historians typically attribute Numinex with an explosive temper and he was thought to be quite old, even in the First Era. His tyranny over Skyrim was nearly absolute before a hero named Olaf One-Eye sought to end the Dragon’s destructive reign.

Olaf confronted the Dragon atop his lair on Mount Anthor. The pair purportedly battled each other for some time before Numinex was bested. Olaf imprisoned him inside Dragonsreach and placed his skull over the Jarl’s throne after Numinex’s death. Bards such as Svaknir have challenged the validity of Olaf’s battle with the Dragon and the truth may never be definitively known.

6 Ahbiilok

Ahbiilok is another very old and powerful Dragon that has managed to evade execution for quite some time. The Akaviri Dragonguard lists his entry in the Atlas of Dragons as someone who managed to evade the carnage of the First Era.

Reportedly, there were occasional sightings of Ahbiilok that placed him somewhere in the Jerall Mountains. Members of the Dragonguard tried to slay the great beast on multiple occasions, but Ahbiilok survived every encounter. Afterward, he supposedly fled to Morrowind where it is believed he still resides. The book Twin Secrets mentions such a Dragon, but it’s unclear whether or not it’s actually Ahbiilok.

5 Kaalgrontiid

Dragons in The Elder Scrolls are described as being extremely ambitious. Kaalgrontiid, a ferocious emerald Dragon, exemplifies this characteristic through his scheming to become a god comparable to Akatosh. The plan revolves around siphoning the power of the moons in order to transform himself into an unstoppable deity.

His ambitions were derailed for a time when he was imprisoned in Elsweyr within the Halls of Colossus. When Kaalgrontiid was inadvertently released he very nearly succeeded in becoming the Dark Aeon as he intended. The Vestige and their companions manage to kill Kaalgrontiid in an epic battle that ends the latter’s plans for good.

4 Odahviing

Odahviing is a sly and dangerous red Dragon who was originally slain in the Merethic Era. His master, Alduin, resurrects him during the events of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. He serves as one of Alduin’s principal lieutenants before being captured by the Dragonborn.

Odahviing, in a display of self-serving pragmatism, agrees to betray his longtime master in return for his freedom. He states that his faith in Alduin is shaken due to the latter’s inability to defeat the Dragonborn once and for all. When Alduin is slain he becomes the player’s permanent ally through the use of a Shout.

3 Durnehviir

Durnehviir stands out from his peers due to his intense interest in necromancy and the arcane arts. His thirst for evermore secrets and forbidden knowledge led him to the Ideal Masters, the lords of the Soul Cairn. Durnehviir, however, was tricked into becoming the eternal servant of the Ideal Masters. In an ironic twist, Durnehviir was rendered undead due to his never-ending confinement in the Soul Cairn.

Time has given Durnehviir ample opportunity for reflection. His defeat at the hands of the Dragonborn in The Elder Scrolls V: Dawnguard convinces him to lend his services to the player. Although never technically freed from the Soul Cairn, the player is able to summon the Dragon temporarily by utilizing his Shout.

2 Paarthurnax

As Alduin’s second-in-command, Paarthurnax was known to have committed many atrocities throughout his early life. When Paarthurnax became disillusioned with his older brother he decided to rebel. The teaching of the thu’um to mortals is attributed to Paarthurnax and the allies who followed him.

When Alduin was defeated for the first time Paarthurnax made a new home atop the Throat of the World. He became the leader of the Greybeards, a group of non-violent monks who study the teachings of Jurgen Windcaller. By the Fourth Era, Paarthurnax is an extremely wise creature whose power lies not in his fiery breath, but rather through the use of his mind.

1 Alduin

Undoubtedly, the most powerful Dragon of them all is the World-Eater. He purports to be the firstborn of Akatosh and thus lords over the rest of his kind. Defeated temporarily in ancient days the Nords believe that his eventual return will spell the end of the world.

Alduin’s return is the subject of the main quest in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. Prophecy dictates that only a Dragonborn stands any chance of defeating him and averting the apocalypse. Alduin’s monstrous power stems from his ability to feed on the souls of the dead even in such places as Sovngarde. He is assuredly the alpha-Dragon among his “siblings.”
