Talking about the best heroes in Dota 2 is a little bit like talking about the prettiest leaves on a tree in the fall. They change at uneven rates, so just a single day can pass and suddenly a drab leaf can become vibrant and a vibrant leaf can fall off the tree. All heroes are subject to patches and rebalancing that can see them skyrocket up the charts or fall out of the metagame entirely.
Yet there are a few heroes that have been around for a while that, while they might not be immune to nerfs, are certainly more resistant to them than others. Experts that have mastered these heroes don’t sweat it when an upcoming patch looks to put a stop to their reign of dominance because they can prioritize other skills and items to keep them strong and scary. These are the most notable heroes that players should either learn to master or learn to ban.
10 Puck
Even as Dota 2 adds more characters through the battle pass, some characters look even better as the pool of heroes grows. Puck is one of those because the skills employed are great against everyone.
The combo from Puck with the Illusory Orb blink in, the Waning Rift silence, and the Dream Coil ultimate is devastating already. Tack on the Phase shift to get out of trouble and this is one of the premier gankers in the game.
9 Razor
There are a handful of support heroes that can reduce the effectiveness of carries, but Razor is a carry that fulfills this role. There is a good reason that while cash winnings keep increasing as games get more serious, Razor’s popularity is on the rise.
Razor has it all, a slow, a damage steal, a movement speed boost, and armor reduction. The only hope opposing carries have is to blink away, freeing Razor up to destroy the rest of the team that gets left behind.
8 Visage
The battle pass has plenty of extra content to unlock, but every reward combined cannot ever replace the terrifying presence of Visage in the game. It’s a support hero that requires next to no farm in order to deliver devastating nukes.
There is a lot of micromanagement involved with the ultimate familiars, but after mastering that, Visage is a solidified staple in the top tiers. Because Visage can self-defend and self-heal, every team that doesn’t know how to play with Visage will likely ban the hero to maintain any hope for winning.
7 Nyx Assassin
At one point, this spot would have been occupied by Anti-Mage, but there is a new mana-burner in town with more utility and greater burst damage that still carries games. Nyx Assassin has essentially filled the Anti-Mage role and added onto it.
Impale is an area of effect stun for 2.6 seconds, which is more than enough time to unleash Mana Burn and Vendetta. If this hasn’t already disposed of the target, don’t forget that the Dagon is core to this build and will deliver an additional devastating nuke.
6 Clinkz
No hero makes players want to pull the plug like an enemy Clinkz. This guy has been devastating heroes since back in the original Dota and nothing has changed. Some might even blame the latest outage in some regions on a developer getting farmed by a Clinkz. Not a bad conspiracy!
Everybody already fears the Skeleton Walk, Searing Arrows, and Strafe combo. After farming an Orchid Malevolence, all any normal heroes can do is die. Other carries might be able to handle a one-on-one better, but Clinkz wipes out the rest of the team.
5 Beastmaster
Sometimes Dota 2 events have to be postponed. For players that routinely go against the Beastmaster, they might as well be postponed forever because that’s not a battle that people are going to regularly win.
Ranged strength characters are already in short supply because it’s two advantages in one. And somehow, this wasn’t considered when they gave him additional attack speed, move speed, and adds that slowdown targets. He’s a ridiculous carry that paid professions still don’t like to fight against.
4 Enigma
There has never been a city to host a tournament that doesn’t heavily feature Enigma, regardless of which location wins the bid. Passing up on the jungle is wasting experience and gold. Thankfully, nobody combines jungling and ganking quite like Enigma.
The entire goal of the game for opposing teams is to stop this hero from getting a Blink Dagger. If they can’t, then it’s only a matter of time before a Black Hole hits the entire team. Even those smart enough to stay apart become easy fodder for Enigma’s friendly carries.
3 Broodmother
There is a good reason that players are getting banned for smurfing in matchmaking. Broodmother in the hands of a pro player is monstrous at lower tiers. Yet it’s still a top-three carry option even at the top these days.
On top of being one of the hardest carries in the game that requires spending tons of money on wards and gems, she’s also an incredible pusher that can knock a lane down in only a minute with Spawn Spiderlings if she goes unopposed.
2 Lycan
Lycan combines the strengths of the last two heroes, jungling, and pushing, then adds a whole lot of strength and carry to the mix. Those who go against Lycan can’t tell if he’s meant to be a tank or a carry because he does both at a high level.
Lycan also shuts down enemy carries with an area of effect Howl that reduces their damage and armor. Meanwhile, a passive buff increases his damage by 42% and HP regeneration by 8. Again, that’s a passive ability. He’s absolutely incredible.
1 Alchemist
For the longest time, it was well-known that giving heroes a means of increasing income would break the game. An exception was made for Alchemist. And unfortunately for his enemies, it doesn’t look like anybody can get a lid back on Pandora’s Box.
The Chemical Rage and Acid Spray make him a lethal carry even in group fights. The cherry on top of this destruction sundae is a nuke that stuns for four seconds. With so much money and these types of skills, great players can essentially afford any and all items that limit opponents, making Alchemist the best in the business across all tiers of play.
