On Sunday, the official Fortnite Twitter account released a series of cryptic tweets that sparked mystery and intrigue among the community. In addition, the account’s avatar was changed to a Kitsune mask and the background was changed to two figures, donning similar masks, chasing after a third character that was obscured off-screen.
As fans continued to speculate about the meaning, all of the tweets were deleted from the account, with no official word from the Fortnite crew, and everything was changed back to normal. One of the leading theories was that the acclaimed “Drift” skin was returning, as some of the Tweets directly mentioned the character and he was one of the figures in the background.
But a day after deleting the tweets, the meaning was revealed – they were meant to build hype for February’s Fortnite Crew rewards pack, which includes a new warrior named Vi, dubbed “Fox Clan’s last hope.” Instead of a mask, like Fox Clan-related characters have donned in the past, Vi has a hood in the shape of a fox’s head and a scarf with paws on the end.
February’s Fortnite Crew Pack includes Vi, as well as an alternate blue skin called the Drift Shift Wrap, the Foxbow Quiver Back Bling, the Crooked Claw, and a new loading screen featuring Vi. The pack will open for subscribers on Jan. 31 at approximately 7 p.m. ET before rotating out at the end of February.
Fortnite Crew is a monthly subscription-based service that offers special skins, V-Bucks and access to the most recent Battle Pass. January’s Fortnite Crew Pack offered a special Green Arrow skin, as well as other items related to the DC hero.
Not much is known about the mysterious Fox Clan that Vi has to save, other than the fact that two related skins have been released in the past. The aforementioned Drift was the first, releasing as part of Fortnite‘s Chapter 1: Season 5 Battle Pass in July 2018. As players progressed through challenges, they could unlock new pieces to his outfit. Drift quickly became one of the more iconic characters in the game’s history.
Two years later, capitalizing off of Drift’s success, the Fortnite team released Catalyst in Season X, the final season for Chapter 1. Catalyst essentially served as a female counterpart to Drift, with the same Kitsune aesthetic, and was one of seven skins available during the season that were spin-offs of older, popular skins. Like Drift, several different styles were available for Catalyst after completing various challenges.
Fox Clan wasn’t even a recognized organization until it was confirmed by the series of tweets leading up to Vi’s announcement. The tweets also name-dropped Drift and Catalyst, confirming them as members of Fox Clan. Given the lore revealed in the past couple of days, Fox Clan will likely play a bigger part in Fortnite‘s story moving forward into future updates.
Fortnite is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
